It comes from the true story of Knute Rockney, who played for the University of Notre Dame, and almost single-handedly turned them into a football powerhouse during his playing years. After playing, he became a coach, bring all kinds of new innovations to the sport, including the forward pass. George Gipp was one of his star players, and when Gipp was struck with a deadly disease and couldn't play, the coach asked the team to win one for the Gipper- which they did.
