“apple podcasts recommended this to me, and having enjoyed gimlet’s the two princes, i decided to give it a shot.
the first act was pretty compelling, and both jonathan groff and jessie shelton are wonderful performers. the second act was a lot more boring, and by the third act it was legitimately awful. as you’ve probably read in other reviews of this podcast, it showcases an extremely toxic (borderline abusive) relationship. i have no problem with toxic relationships in art, but i do have a problem when they are presented as normal, healthy, and loving. that’s where this show fails. judith and jase should not, under any circumstance, have ended up together. it is so not okay that judith’s gaslighting and lying were excused.
other than that, the music kind of all sounded the same, at least to me? jessie shelton’s voice could be somewhat grating sometimes, but that’s also personal preference. all in all, i think there are better podcast musicals out there (like season three of the two princes! i would totally recommend that one!) that don’t glorify harmful behavior and relationships.”
