Born into a faithful household
My parents were from NY but lived in Fresno and married in Tiburon. My older brother, the family jock, was 2 years old glued to the tv when sports came on. By the time I was born, I was growing up with his trading cards, sports paraphernalia, videogames, and going to his football games. My brother played nose tackle, eventually moving to linebacker til he suffered a major knee injury in a bad practice. Terrible coaches ruined his aspirations to play professionally someday. I was years behind him and played tight end and moved on to qb. There are just so many stories of how football and Niners influenced my early childhood. In our household, we grew up in Lake Tahoe, where everyone was either a 49ers fan or a Raiders fan, except for the one guy who was a Chargers fan. We were 49ers fans and Notre Dame fans. I actually would have ended up going to ND if not for the tuition costs. As Notre Dame fans, my dad introduced me to Montana, his super bowls, and the Chicken Soup Game. What did it for me was the excitement of a passing offense. I grew up watching Steve Young, playing the 49ers in Madden and Blitz playing with Young, Hearst, Rice, etc. As I got older, my appreciation of the game matured. A deep ball is still exciting, but I also got into a lot of tactics and strategy games. That's when I could really start appreciating football: the schemes, the gameplanning, types of coverages, pre-snap motion, etc. etc.I was absolutely ecstatic at the announcement to hire Kyle Shanahan, to Hell with all the doubters after the Falcons sb and all the doubters now. In the 90s and now the Niners just feel like a different team. They're exciting, they always touted strong offensive stars, offensive minded coaches. They established the West Coast Offense in 80s, they had a record sb performance with Mike Shanahan as oc, and now they are doing it again with another innovative offensive minded head coach.Read full review »
