“Whatever your political affiliation is, I would like to think this is a science based broadcast. I felt this recent episode crossed the political line. Instead of bashing the president for the things he says, explain what he meant scientifically. What is the difference between knowing something exists because we can test for it and not being able to quantify it because we did not test for it? What is the difference in our known positive case levels versus unknown positive cases which weren’t tested? Or another country’s falsely lower levels because they are not testing. Are our levels “higher” because we test?
Did we really think the president believes that SARS-CoV-2 only exists because we test for it? Or do we suspect he was trying to insinuate we have more known cases because of more testing versus places who simply don’t know and are not acknowledging their true levels because they are not testing?
Use this as an opportunity to discuss statistics and what the testing means and how knowledge and testing affect things. Discuss science. Don’t perpetuate ignorance.”
