55: $1 million in stolen cards to startup?

55: $1 million in stolen cards to startup?

As video games and superhero movies flourish worldwide, the most famous artifacts of geek culture are drawing price tags worthy of the great artists. One startup, run by fans, wants to help other geeks take ownership of the things they love.

In this episode we interview founder Joe Mahavuthivanij and discuss:
    • How losing $1 million worth of Magic: The Gathering cards inspired a collectables-based investment startup
    • How non-fungible tokens (the system crypto art was using) and collectables can allow people to invest in a small piece of an expensive item
    • Collectable items can be turned into mini-IPOs
    • Superhero movies are causing geeky collectables to skyrocket in value

    Host: Jeff Peterson

54: Art of Scrappy Startup, Boston Fed Edition

54: Art of Scrappy Startup, Boston Fed Edition

This is our central banking perspective, with guest Paul Brassil, technology solutions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Brassil is an industry veteran who switched to a career with the Federal Reserve System. Having been involved with blockchain projects since early days, Paul is familiar with ins-and-outs of tech experimentations, shaping its technical roadmap. His team also evaluates automation, including AI, and other emerging tech.

Paul sees software eating the world (e.g. Uber, Airbnb). His approach to emerging tech is not just digitizing legacy infrastructure and economic models but think about broader paradigm shifts. Paul compares their blockchain experimentation at the Boston Fed to a 'scrappy' tech startup. To help the Fed be more educated and prepared for market adoption, they want to provide thought leadership based on practical experimentation in a sandbox-like environment.

The Boston Fed stands out from its counterparts in the Federal Reserve System with its focus on tinkering rather than policy & economic research.

As a public service org., they want to apply their learnings to Fed functions, including payments settlement, regulation & supervision, regional and community outreach, blockchain for social good, as well as training their bank examiners on distributed ledger knowledge.

Paul thinks Facebook's Libra, like other ambitious tech projects, should aim to create a mobile experience so smooth that even his grandmother can use it.

53: Storytelling Inspired By Puppet Theatre

53: Storytelling Inspired By Puppet Theatre

Rizqi Rachmat, an international hip hop artist and visual designer, stars in the Amazon film documentary: “Rizqi Presents Blockchain.” Rizqi's world is mixed with economic think tanks and creative arts. He attributes the forces that shape him today: martial arts, Wayang (Indonesian puppet theatre), his mother's dancing, and an education that emphasizes free markets.

Rizqi talks to us about fascinating aspects of his film production, including a visit to the Bitcoin mining center in Montana in dead of winter. He shares why he believes this technology could empower people in a democracy (i.e. voting), while disrupting the future of finance, among other areas. That's why he wants to blend urban art movement and visuals into his storytelling to help distill various ideas for audience in the film.

    52: Dashing Through Latin America

    52: Dashing Through Latin America

In our first coverage of Latin America, George Donnelly from Dash describes his work with merchants and businesses across the region. Particularly in Venezuela, there are growing pains and discontent as many households are living in poverty in an economy spiraling out of control.

In the U.S., cryptocurrencies are treated more like speculative investments whereas in markets like Venezuela there are pressing needs for alternative ways to manage and use money.

Hernando De Soto, the Peruvian economist, has said for decades people here lack systemic access to meaningful capital and credit to build wealth. In the informal economy, people mostly use cash, for their small businesses and other daily transactions. They don't own bank accounts.

George draws insights from first-hand interactions with communities and merchants in Colombia, Venezuela and Peru. As a coordinator, he listens to their stories and challenges. Then he shows them how technology can remove frictions in their financial management. George ends with some thoughts on Facebook's Libra digital currency while highlighting some misconceptions that Americans have about "money" in regions like Latin America.

    52: Shyft-ing Identity - Joseph Weinberg

    52: Shyft-ing Identity - Joseph Weinberg

After a long hiatus, we’re back!

In today’s episode Jeff interviews Joseph Weinberg, co-founder of Shyft network which wants to shake up the world of identity verification for blockchain. He also advises on blockchain to governments (G20 and G7). In this episode we discuss:

-How cryptocurrency went from being super uncool 2010-2014 to now being pretty cool. It’s to the point to where an iced tea company had their stock jump because they added crypto to the name.

-What it was like living with a tribe of natives in the Peruvian amazon. Many people didn’t wear clothes, clean water, or a roof, but everyone had a satellite dish and cellphone. They also had western unions.

-The very early days of buiding a blockchain company: they basically had to make everything up as they went along

    - One of the most unknown and most impactful bodies in the world, the FATF – the financial action task force, a division of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which is the research division of G7 and G20 made after WWII to give policy advice for the global economy.

    - One of the recent policies that has come out from the FATF that is very concerning for the crypto space, and then how Shyft aims to tackle that new issue
