Sona Jobarteh & Band interprets African's most traditional songs without removing anything from their original substance. She holds the title of the First Female Professional Kora player (long Kora) and griot singer. Maya Sona Jobarteh is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, griot and music teacher from the Gambia in West Africa. Sona Jobarteh has been the artist of the year at the Africa Festival in 2018. She is a regular guest speaker at the International Trade Conference. She has a music school in London named after her grandfather ABJ School of Music. Sona Jobarteh is currently working and fundraising on the Gambia Academy of Music and Culture, set to be the first cultural centre in The Gambia.
