Constructive criticism
I really want to like this podcast, but as some of the other reviews have pointed out... It needs work. Your listeners tune in to this podcast to be informed. I love being entertained as well, but all too often the hosts seem to prioritize entertainment value over useful information. As someone who has been following this podcast from the beginning, I want to offer the following suggestions to improve the show. 1. You guys really need a structure. I know J Money isn't one for planning out the podcast each week, but you need some sort of loose rubric to follow. I timed one of your podcasts and it took you roughly 9 minutes to actually get into a topic or meaningful content. It’s hard to stay focused on an hour long show with that much fluff. My suggestion? Have different segments that you talk about each week. Start the show with a "tip of the day" perhaps, mix in a current FI event, give an update on the best FI progress or decision you made this week, etc. The sky is the limit, but you need those topics/segments to give the show some pace and direction. Of course each week should have a theme like you're currently doing, but you need pieces of specific content to break up the hour. 2. I understand you may not want to give specific answers to questions, but you have to find a way to give your listeners something to understand or to relate to. For instance (sorry to pick on you Paula), during this week’s Ask Us Anything Paula was asked a question about what value to offer an investor if you're looking to get into the real estate market. She then went on to talk about how she doesn't have time to answer specific questions, but we should share her and J's blog posts and podcasts to offer value to them (Of course I’m paraphrasing, but that was the larger point). I think you missed the point here... I wasn't the person asking the question, but I believe their intent was to get advice on how to approach local investors to learn from them. From how I interpreted the question, they weren’t specifically asking YOU for help. Their intent was to learn about simple ways they can offer value to an investor, in exchange for the educational value the investor can provide to the aspiring real estate investor. There are many many other examples of this and both hosts are equally as guilty. Again, this comes down to being informative. We want to learn! We need personal stories, real life examples, anything substantial and concrete for us to relate to and make an informed decision for our own lives. We're looking for practical advice! 3. J Money, I think you can provide more value than you let on. You have some really good ideas on being financially conservative, frugal, side hustles, etc. Your idea to post something to Craigslist every Friday was fantastic! Your simple lifehacks/frugalhacks add your specific flair and value to the show. This could easily tie into the topics/segments I suggested above. Add those small punches of value to break up the show discussions and keeps your listeners engaged. 4. Prioritize educational value over entertainment value. Obviously you guys should have fun, but we come to you because we trust you as a source of information. You both preach, especially J Money, about how you love numbers, but you rarely talk about them! Get into some cold hard facts and plans of action that people can take. Do a weekly case study, gather information on a specific user each week to break down, etc. etc. There are far more effective ways to showcase your differing viewpoints, than simply stating your differing opinions. Show us, don’t tell us. Hopefully you find this helpful! I know you read all of your reviews.Read full review »

These two are awesome. Full of great information but also fun to listen to… the best of both worlds when it comes to learning about a normally dry subject! Thanks for this podcast and keep ‘em comin’!
