Donald Kagan is an embodiment of a scholar. Profound knowledge on the subject, versatile interest in general history and ancient languages and his sheer gift for storytelling all make this a unique experience. Prof Kagan is so inspiring! We only wish we were one of his students sitting in his classes! Wonderful. To listen and listen again.

It only takes a couple of minutes into Kagan's Introduction when I was shocked and incredulous at false statements with which he shovels into freshman minds: "the Greeks had no priests" he says - false: if the citizen went to the temple of athena, dionysis or other GODS, they were met by various...Read full review »

Old fashioned lectures are no longer useful as an educational tool. What’s the whole point of being iTunes U, if it’s just a collection of the professor just reading his own "yellow pads notes”? If Yale is keen on this digital project useful for everyone for inexpensive college courses that work...Read full review »

Kagan obviously knows his subject. However, it would be excellent if the professor could incorporate graphics, e.g., photos of the Greek mainland and islands, archaeological finds, ancient Greek art, into his lectures.

Prof. Kagan offers a fantastic introduction to ancient greek history. He’s right that the subject is “terribly interesting”, but his obvious admiration for the greek culture and ideals and his extensive knowledge of it make it just irresistible. If you like history, this may become your favorite...Read full review »

Fell asleep 3x during the intro. Is there someone who can speak without clearing phlegm every 15 seconds , and can present his thoughts without reading at level of a grade 2 student?

I've been listening to this course on and off again repeatedly for the last three years or so and I never tire of it. I have yet to watch the video, but I love to listen to the course while driving or sitting at the beach. Kagan is exceptional at introducing topics in an approachable way, that...Read full review »

Prof. Donald Kagan is a master historian, honest in presenting all possible different views for the events and fun to watch. This is a very good introduction to any book on ancient Greek history. More courses like this should be made available.

This course tracks the history of the the Greeks through it's epicenter: the Polis. Granted, the course strays a touch in order to allow for a broader picture, which is not a negative point at all. yes, we got to hear all about the polis and the hoplites, but this guy has some serious throat clearing going on. It sounds like he's hocking a loogie every three minutes, and it's seriously distracting.

Yes this is more of a Political and Military history of Ancient Greek History. This information is completely invaluable in understanding where and how Western Politics was established, i.e. Democracy.

I picked this series up casually when I got my iPad, but became so engrossed in Kagan's lucid lecture style that I finished all 24 lectures and purchased the textbook and did the assigned readings! This course is best described as a political or military history of Greece. Poets, philosophers, and artists are mentioned only when they are commenting on politics or history.
