#24 Improved efficiency means a lower carbon footprint. How can this be achieved in the white liquor plant?

#24 Improved efficiency means a lower carbon footprint. How can this be achieved in the white liquor plant?

Improved efficiency leads to less overall energy use which in turn means the lowering of carbon footprint. In the search for improvements in white liquor plant operations ANDRITZ has developed a uniquely simplified and ultimately more efficient technology, LimeDry-H, for improved lime mud feeding.

The LimeDry-H system has seen a number of improvements including the implementing of a hollow central shaft (which means no vacuum tank is required), central shaft axial movement, a better precoat renewal system and improved maintainability. The new system also has the option for the latest in ANDRITZ autonomous white liquor plant solutions.

The improvements to the new system have resulted in a more homogeneous lime mud feed to the lime kiln. This means more efficient drying resulting in the decreasing of emissions across the whole process. Additionally there are water savings of up to 60%.

In this podcast we talk to ANDRITZ white liquor plant experts, Ville Seppänen, Sales Manager, Kalle Rekola, Product Manager, and Airi Antikainen, Product Owner, SMART Products about the advantages and benefits LimeDry-H brings to operations.

#22 What challenges are presented when building one of the largest pulp mills in the world?

#22 What challenges are presented when building one of the largest pulp mills in the world?

Suzano’s Cerrado pulp project in Mato Grosso do Sul state in mid-western Brazil is progressing well and on schedule to start-up in June 2024. The mill is truly a giant and will be the largest single line eucalyptus mill in the world, producing 2.55 million tons per year of pulp.

A project this size obviously involves some challenges, especially with the enormous size of the equipment being supplied. ANDRITZ was contracted to supply all the islands for the Cerrado project including wood processing plant with five chipping lines, the world largest fiberline, the complete pulp drying system, evaporation plant, HERB recovery boiler, biomass power boiler and white liquor plant with ANDRITZ gasification.

The mill will also be a leader when it comes to the installation of the latest environmentally friendly and efficient technologies; ANDRITZ has also supplied one of the first SulfoLoop sulfuric acid plants in addition to the latest automation and digital technology.

In this podcast we are delighted to talk to two leading professionals responsible for the Cerrado project, Joel Starepravo, Project Director, ANDRITZ and Mauricio Miranda, Suzano’s Director of Engineering.

Listen as our experts describe the challenges, reveal the solutions and highlight the teamwork involved as one of the industry’s largest ever projects is brought to life.

#21 Maintaining excellence: How do you balance old and new at paper mills?

#21 Maintaining excellence: How do you balance old and new at paper mills?

You can witness the remarkable evolution of servicing and maintenance in the automotive industry when you consider how far it has advanced over the past few decades. Breakdowns by the roadside have become increasingly rare, primarily because vehicle manufacturers have established clear service agreements and schedules to ensure that cars remain on the road. This approach to maintenance has now been adopted by pulp and paper mills across Europe.

Less unscheduled stoppages and breakdowns equals better overall efficiency which in turn results in much more effective use of raw materials and energy. This all adds up to improved sustainability at pulp and paper mills, as well as valuable cost savings.

In this podcast we talk to two ANDRITZ experts in the field of maintenance, Ismo Ihalainen, Global Product Manager and Synergy Product Director and Marcio Wagner, Maintenance Director, Asset management, and Iberian Business Manager. Find out how scheduled maintenance can increase the lifetime of equipment at pulp and paper mills, while simultaneously boosting efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint.

#20 What is the importance of sound ESG standards when operating in the pulp and paper industry?

#20 What is the importance of sound ESG standards when operating in the pulp and paper industry?

Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance, or ESG, as it is more commonly known, has rapidly become a defining factor for investors as they look for companies that have sound environmental performance and social and employment standards.

But what does ESG mean when applied to the pulp and paper industry? For producers this means ensuring that sustainable development takes place across the entire supply chain in both environmental and social aspects, from the sourcing of raw material to the recyclability of products and everything in between.

For global suppliers such as ANDRITZ, it means ensuring all its stringent ESG goals are met when it comes to manufacturing and supplying technology wherever the company operates in the world.

In this podcast we hear from experts on ESG from both sectors of the industry: Susan Brunner, Head of Product Sustainability & Positioning, Mondi Group and Caroline Hofer, ESG Manager, ANDRITZ about the challenges involved in setting ESG goals in a rapidly changing world when it comes to regulations and compliance.
