It never seems to amaze me what a high stranded of self education you can receive from podcasts being a humble uk trucker I listen to podcasts all the time. Just to think I can listen to a top professor break down Shakespeare totally amazing and all for free keep it up

I first heard Emma deliver lectures 20 years ago, so when I came across these, I had to listen to them! They are so good, I’m now re-listening to them yet again, three years later. Emma really is THE authority on Shakespeare (and her recent book is worth a read, if you enjoy these.)

Keep up the good work Emma! I loved your approach to Shakespeare work.

By asking a small, apparently trivial, question about each play, Emma Smith provides a different approach and gradually opens up the whole play. I have found these lectures fascinating, both for plays I know relatively well and (as she provides a plot summary at the start) for new plays too. She...Read full review »

Wonderfully thoughtful lectures on all of the Shax plays. Love the unusual thematic approach and the lack of chronology/order so that you can discover the plays in a new sequence. Also suitable for new Shax fans as each lecture has a synopsis. Critical theory mentioned, but doesn’t go into it too...Read full review »

Prof. Emma Smith’s series of lectures are an absolute pearl of wisdom and very valuable. Very easy to follow, very informative but at the same time accessible to anyone and everyone from scholars, students and laymen. She does not take anything for granted but manages to provide original insights...Read full review »

Really opening up my thoughts on Shakespeare. Prof Smith is such a learned and creative thinker. Sound quality not fantastic, but the relentless coughs are *very* evocative of undergraduate lectures at Oxford

I'm a final year BA English Lit student, and listen to these lectures while out walking. Always a different angle on the plays which is helpful. One downside of listening on headphones is that the coughing (occurs at least once per minute) is hard to miss and becomes quite distracting, if...Read full review »

I love these lectures. As someone who studied Shakespeare at Uni and has been going to performances for 30+ years, I still come away from them with new insights and different ways to think about things. Understand them for what they are - encouragements to think in different ways, not claims to...Read full review »

These are valuable explorations of the plays, packed with historical insight and interpretation.

Exactly what you would expect from the way literature is taught now. Life sucked out of it. Also completely wrong about A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

I can't believe the aggressive pubescent reaction against authority, gender, and/or person by Oxford students in these podcasts. Orchestrated coughing fits severely mar any enjoyment of the well-constructed presentations.

Very interesting and insightful commentary! I love listening to the corresponding episode after reading each play for class. It adds a lot to my understanding and enjoyment of the plays.

Thank you so much for putting these lectures online, as they are very helpful. You are absolutely brilliant.

For true Bard nerds only, she poses questions really worth considering about these great works. Be sure to familiarize yourself with each text first, however. You do not have to listen to the whole series if you’d like to investigate a specific play or two. Update: 2017 lecture mic is farther...Read full review »

Dry, sometimes confusing and somehow lacking in the necessary passion on the deliverance. Which means a monotone lecture that can be, dare I say it, boring. She knows her subject, no doubt, but I wish her deliverance were more approachable. Sometimes the main attention catching is the coughing...Read full review »

I went to the university of the holy spirit. To which bilding are you gonna put your ladder? These are excellent lectures that require some degree of familiarity with the plays and Shakespeare's world. They are models of clarity and sign-post many points of possible departure for the undergraduate or inquisitive amateur. No jargon and illuminating references to contemporary criticism...Read full review »
