“I used to subscribe and listen to Around The NFL, a hugely successful and popular podcast with a legion of fans worldwide.
This podcast was quietly dropped by the NFL in May, but nobody was actually told for months. Rather than launch a new podcast to replace it, and give fans a choice whether or not to sign up for the replacement, a decision was made to simply send this new and unrelated podcast to former subscribers of the late, lamented ATN.
Whilst the inevitable social media posts were published expressing sadness at the demise of ATN and the release of two of the hosts from the employment of the NFL, all of this appears to have forgotten now that Gregg Rosenthal has gone solo. This is fine, and it’s his decision and the NFL’s prerogative, but this somewhat inferior, ersatz version of the much loved ATN has been foist on a multitude of people whether they want it or not. And in this listener’s opinion, this podcast is like the watery, powdered scrambled eggs that you get in a cheap hotel. It’s ok if you’re expectations are low, but it’s not the quality breakfast item that it’s masquerading as.
I like American Football. I like podcasts. I like Gregg Rosenthal. But this podcast is not ATN, lacks the warmth and nuanced human connections which made its predecessor so popular, and therefore I have no desire to listen to it. I would have preferred to make this decision for myself rather than having the artist formerly known as The Old Boss dropped into my saved podcasts unannounced and undesired.
I’ve switched to The Insiders instead. It presents useful information and updates in a non-patronising way, without trying to be a cross between ATN and Good Morning Football and failing to succeed.”
