“I was 18 in 1973. I was a typical 18-year-old girl, boy crazy, slightly insecure, and not at all sure what I expected or wanted from the future. Luckily for me I had a father who always encouraged me to use my brain. He told me honestly what he felt about politics, and it was really kind, but it was thoughtful. He was a conservative man from a small town, with little experience of worldly things. His sophistication of thought has always amazed me. And even more so the older I get.
So many students at my small private college were concerned about nothing more than getting high and who they would sleep with that night, I was disgusted. But I really had no knowledge, nor much understanding of what was happening to the country that I loved dearly.Even then it was not a typical patriotic love, it was an idealistic belief in the things that the United States stood for.
I would bait the politically interested young man who wanted to see Nixon impeached, both to tease and flirt, and to learn something. It was a confusing and difficult time. The seriousness of the Vietnam war and what appeared to be the complete lack of integrity in government were issues that overwhelm me.
This podcast has reawakened the righteousness of that 18-year-old girl. It has made me somewhat ashamed that I have not done more in my life to learn these facts and that they are not forgotten. Thank you and all the historians and reporters for your dedication and hard work. The world needs the facts and an honest discussion about them. Our conclusions will not all be the same, but I believe those discussions make us better people. Cynthia Rich”
