BCG extension manager, Ciara Cullen, recently caught up with Birchip farmer Robbie Lee and BCG livestock officer Alison Frischke to discuss the profitable integration of livestock and cropping. For a mixed farm to operate at its full potential, the two components (livestock and cropping) need to work better than the individual components alone. This BCG in Focus is funded by the National Landcare Program 1 Federal Government and the Wimmera CMA.

BCG extension officer, Jemma Pearl, recently met with Rupanyup farmer David Matthews to discuss the opportunities for collaborative approaches in agriculture. Collaborative models have shown that they can assist in maintaining services in rural communities, for example the Bendigo Community Bank network, but there are more opportunities out there for collaborative models to assist farmers into the future.

BCG extension officer, Jemma Pearl, recently met with Agfarm’s regional manager for Victoria and South Australia James Ryssenbeek to discuss cash flow tips for the 2018 season and how alternative forms of cash flow can assist farming businesses. Managing cash flow throughout the year is a balancing act. As the 2018 winter cropping season begins, growers may have already spent money on seed, seed treatments, pre-emergent herbicides, back loading fertiliser, and stocking up on mouse bait.

Mrs Sounness and Mr Stuchbury have significant expertise in the production of pulses in the Wimmera and Mallee.

2017 main site hosts Craig Rickard and Jim Rickard farm next to each other in the Curyo area, 25km north west of Birchip. Craig and Jim were nice enough to not only let the BCG team host trials and the main field day on their properties, but to let BCG CEO Chris Sounness ask them a few hard questions.

PIRSA-SARDI researcher Kenton Porker and BCG trials officer Gen Clarke presented the 'managing early sown wheat' trial at the BCG main site in 2017, which is part of the wider GRDC project. BCG research manager Claire Browne discussed wheat varieties suited to the Wimmera and Mallee, with the site also being home to NVT (National Variety Trials).
