Research Updates On Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorder

Join coach Georgie and the Confident Eaters team in today's episode, as we discuss recent updates to Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorder in one our monthly coaches education meeting.
One of the papers we discuss in this conversation is all about self control. If you struggle with self control or wondered if you can maximize your own, then we have good news for you! Self control is something we can strengthen and develop, no matter what your starting point is. It's like building a muscle. It takes time and you have to work on it. One of the things we learned was that your self control is actually strongest when you're part of a group or team.
If you want to hear the episode where we explain our 3 D Process for getting past an urge, check out the episode here.
In the second paper, we discuss how common emotional eating is! The research shows that the way we cope with emotional stress can be helpful or harmful to our wellbeing. Higher levels of emotional eating are linked to higher body weight, disordered eating and depression and anxiety. We also learned that catastrophizing and self blame are particularly problematic for emotional eating and binge eating.
In order to help with these things, we will discuss how to de-catastrophize or take things more lightly after a mistake. We want to work on reducing the automatic self blame that many of us struggle with. We will discuss the antidote to self blame, which is also shown to be one of the most helpful treatments to healing from emotional eating and binge eating. Want to know what it is? Check out the episode! .

In this episode, Georgie and Christina talk about the experience many of us have when we try to get too much done and end up not getting anything done. Have you been there?

If you often find yourself living in this tension of knowing how much is "enough", sprinting through life at a hurried pace to be "productive" and only punctuating your errands through bouts of binge eating or compulsive overeating, you would probably benefit from supporting yourself through real rest and margin.

Finding the sweet spot of being productive and supporting yourself requires getting to know your capacity, pacing yourself, and regularly adjusting your expectations. If you want to know how we work through these things with clients, then you don't want to miss this episode.

    WTF Is Stress Management Anyway?

    WTF Is Stress Management Anyway?

Everybody is "stressed", but we don't always understand exactly what that means. We believe that not all stress is bad. It is a protective mechanism that helps us survive situations in life. It also allows us to be challenged and have meaningful experiences. At the same time, if we are stacking stress on top of itself without coming back to baseline, it can cause some health problems and if we don't know how to manage it well, we can develop some maladaptive behaviors like binge eating.
So, how can we be clear on what to do with stress if we don't want a life totally devoid of it? That's exactly what we are talking about in today's episode. Join coach Georgie and one of the coaches from the Confident Eaters team, Christina, as we explore four elements that you can use to manage the stress in your life.

She has been a client of mine for a while, and lately, she has been moving away from unhealthy eating patterns like emotional eating and binge eating and moving toward healthy, balanced eating that helps her achieve weight loss. She has done some amazing work since we first started meeting, but she still finds that she has difficulty with grazing between meals, especially when work stress hits.

Phyllis represents what the process can look like when someone has stopped binge eating, but still hasn't been able to master the art of stopping at satisfied. We were also able to discuss how to manage the thoughts and feelings like "I'm not far enough along". Have you ever felt that way? Then you don't want to miss today's episode.

Amazing and healing podcast

I’ve struggled with binge eating my entire life, although I wasn’t able to give it a name for a long time. Most medical providers, and even mental health providers, are ill equipped to diagnose this and even less so to treat. I started listening to these podcasts in 2022, and am working my way through them from older to newer episodes. I am staggered and beyond grateful for the evidence-based knowledge, experience, and wisdom I’ve found here. I am slowly changing my paradigm from constant dieting and food restriction to being aware of my emotional health and doing things to boost my overall physical and mental health. Eating well and exercising are things I’ve begun to embrace because they make me better and happier, not because they correlate with a number on the scale. It’s not a quick fix, and by no means am I “cured” of binge eating. But I am amazed that in the two months I’ve been listening and trying to incorporate the podcast ideas into my life, how much my life has changed for the better. I can’t thank Georgie and Mary Claire enough for this podcast series. It is literally life changing.

All all access?

So I guess all the episodes are “all access now”? Such a shame for those of us who can’t afford.

The lightbulb

Oh man, the most recent podcast “how to deal with 9 emotional eating entanglement” was such a lightbulb moment for me. Well actually 8 lightbulbs. I identified with 8 of the 9 examples she covered and the responses are so simple and logical. And especially at the end when she reminds us that none of us are hopeless and that anyone is capable of x,y,z (insert challenge here), I felt very empowered after listening. Great great work Georgie, thank you!
