Misguided Empathy
Having listened to the entire podcast, I believe the creators are contributing to a narrative about youth in foster care being so “broken” that we should extend every grace to anyone who considers having them in their homes. It’s the kind of ideology that led me to be adopted by someone who abused and neglected me for 15 years. It’s the reason my brother was abused in half the foster homes and institutions he lived in. It’s how caseworkers I know excuse placing kids with unfit foster parents (white and black). Support policies that support all parents and we eventually won’t need to pay to prevent people like Jen and Sarah not to abuse children. This podcast is just another example of people extending more empathy and support to privileged but abusive foster parents than they do to biological parents who abuse because of their own histories of abuse and poverty.

The writing is excellent, the interview material adds so much to the story. The way it is produced and presented help me keep it organized in my head. Really well done.
