Frost Free but totally cool
This is easily now my favourite arcade podcast. It has the perfect blend of technical and repair segments; news; interviews; and plumbing. Though there may be some dispute on the exact timeline, the podcast can broadly be broken up into several distinct eras. Early Years (episodes 1 through 29) Like Computer Space and Pong are to arcades, so are these episodes to Broken Token. The podcast is finding its form, the music is laid back with some Kentucky flavour. Some notable ‘on the road’ segments and interviews culminate in the famous David Crane conversation. My personal favourite moment would have to be the 2 hours of ratchet strap discussion. Golden Age (episodes 30 – 45) Like Pacman, Donkey Kong and Track and Field, these are the podcasts that I go back and play time and time again. From the G07 tech deep dive to the segway about Segways; from the discussion on LEDing a pinball to the words that Brent just can’t say; this is podcast heaven. The show has found its flow entirely and the music is the ideally suited. When I think of Broken Token, this is what I think of. Bring back the movie reviews! JAMMA era (episodes 46 to current) The guys have really become icons of the community by this point. Whitney makes his mark on gaming history with the Sky Skipper re-creation and both of the guys are now so comfortable in the format they could be working in radio. Like the JAMMA era of games, not all of the changes are to everyone’s taste (see the new music from the TNA pinball machine) but they are inarguably now more professional overall and this era is highlighted by some absolutely classic moments, some of which surround frost-free spigots. Personally, I’d really like a return to some of the deeper technical discussions which now seem less frequent, but this is has been replaced by equally valuable discussion on related areas of interest such as 3D printing and vacuum forming. If you have any interest at all in arcade or pinball machines, you owe it to yourself to give this podcast a try and also go back and check out the earlier episodes. The guys seem so genuine and are so easy to listen to I’ve even discovered a side benefit. I used to wait until my toddlers fell asleep in the car before turning this on. I’ve since discovered that getting some Broken Token playing with the family-friendly content and smooth accents sends the little guys off to sleep a lot sooner. Maybe they should consider narrating children’s books on the side. They could definitely consider a side podcast of movie reviews.
