The Journey Begins
Another excellent podcast from, Ray and Cam, the masters of punk history podcasting. This time it’s The Cold War, contemporary history for which they can not only rely on their own memories and experiences as primary sources, they are bound to become playmakers as the story continues to unfold. The cold war is not over. While the Praetorian Guard, Alexander The Great’s vast spy network and the Gestapo may only survive in the history books, the CIA, FBI, MI6, French Resistance, Mossad, Stasi and the KGB all live on, in one form or another. They still have many agents, double agents, sympathisers, lawyers, guns and money and nothing much to do except exercise soft power. They will all soon have bulging dossiers on Ray and Cam. As the podcast evolves to become The Cold War’s definitive, revisionist, journal of record, Ray and Cam will need to withstand every technique of influence, persuasion and threat these organisations have perfected. This is epitomised in the acronym MICE - Money, Ideology, Compromise and Ego. Ray and Cam, be careful. Expect the CIA to offer you fast cars, luxury holidays and paper bags full of dark money to influence the editorial direction of this great narrative. You must resist. Expect an invitation to dinner from Bob Geldoff or Bono as they seek to influence your mind, or an invitation to share the finest Cuban cigars with Fidel Castro for the same, yet opposite, purpose. Beware, at your next Vegas trip, the Kim Philby characters, hiding in plain sight, seeking to flatter you and be your friend and patron. Then there will be the official denials, the deflections, the personal attacks and the PR spin. There will be threats to family and friends, letters with white power in them and bombs threat. Finally, when all this fails, you will be stalked by a silent assassin. Be very careful. Be very wary of why, exactly, you are being awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize. What are “they” wanting in return? Don’t compromise. From all sides of the conflict, there will be disaffected Cold War warriors with secret documents, hidden in dusty attics, just waiting for a channel they can trust to be the new “deep throat”. This podcast is it. There will be explosive revelations in encrypted emails from Edwin Snowdon and Julian Assange with more twists than a John Le Carre novel. These revelations will become known as “The Podcast Papers” and “Reillygate”. I look forward to the tell-all interviews with Daniel Ellsberg, Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger, Richard Perle, Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Putin, Rupert Murdoch, Bob Dylan and Nena, as they all seek to spin the story their way. And, above all, Ray and Cam, you must be prepared to resist the seductions of the next Mata Hari, or Mandy Rice Davies. These spy agencies will be ruthless in their efforts to compromise you. Five Stars. David Kelly
