#157 - In Unrelated News: Good Boys, The Girl Next Door & Hal

We recorded this episode last week, but haven't been able to upload it until now, sorry for the delay, but...On this episode, we talk about a couple a groups of friends that help each other grow as well as a documentary about a director we love and admire. First, we talk about the movie Good Boys starring Jacob Tremblay about a group of tweens who find themselves in waters way above their maturity level in an R-rated comedy. Then we talk about a movie from our high school days about another group of nerdy friends and their brush with badassery in The Girl Next Door starring Emile Hirsch, Elisha Cuthbert, and Paul Dano. #156 - Horror/Comedy/Family: Ready or Not & You're Next

    #156 - Horror/Comedy/Family: Ready or Not & You're Next

On this episode, we get into a couple of genre mashups in horror and comedy and family dynamics. First, we talk about the new movie Ready or Not starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, and Andie Macdowell about a woman marrying into a wealthy family with an insane ritual for bringing in someone new to their empire. Then we talk about a movie from 2011 called You're Next with similar things at play. Directed by Adam Wingard, it's ostensibly about a girl meeting the family of her boyfriend, but there is a lot that isn't exactly what is seems with some comedy and lots of horror to feast on. Alright.... people... ladies and gentlemen of the earth, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, welcome back, welcome to this Celluloid Heroes review.

Have you ever almost ruined a cherished friendship due to difference in opinion of the trustworthiness of Terrence Malick as a filmmaker? Have you ever wasted a good chunk of your day debating the proper place of Hail, Caesar in the Coen brothers’ career? Have you ever marveled at the gracefulness of Tom Cruise’s famous run and clap? If so, then Celluloid Heroes just might be for you. More importantly though, if you want more insight into the often chaotic and confusing world of modern cinema, then this podcast is required listening and I can’t recommend it enough.

Even if you live in Saudi Arabia and the only films at your immediate disposal are The Emoji Movie and Captain Underpants, I’d still recommend it for purely comedic purposes. Listening to Sean and Steven bicker over the most seemingly insignificant things is often the highlight of my day, and it pains me to know that they aren’t reaching the audience they should be.

So since I took the time out of my day to write this review when I could be watching Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again for the 7th time, you better get it together and follow them. Just take one minute to listen to Sean’s incredible intros and you’ll be hooked, I promise.

As Sean and Steven would say, this podcast is “All-time.”

It’s Like Talking To Your Friends About Movies

Sean and Steven give unique perspectives about blockbuster and independent movies from what’s showing in the theater now to movies from their childhood, grouping them together based on genre or director.
They’re a classic excitable vs. laidback pair of friends who are really passionate about movies and the way they are made and who are also not afraid to talk about societal implications and cultural relevance.
It’s completely nerdy and really fun and if you’re the kind of person who likes to dissect movies after you see them, you’ll like this podcast.
