Sn2 Ep11 | Kenyan Doctors on strike: Understanding exactly how Kenyans can afford jobless doctors?

Sn2 Ep11 | Kenyan Doctors on strike: Understanding exactly how Kenyans can afford jobless doctors?

Welcome to episode 11 of Season 2 on CTRH Podcast. Here, as you know, we endeavour to have real conversations intended to make an actual difference.

Today, I am joined by three colleagues to discuss the ongoing Doctors’ strike in Kenya. Like many Kenyans, we remain completely perplexed at exactly how Kenya can afford to have 4,000 jobless doctors and about 1,200 unposted interns? With a barely functioning public healthcare system riddled with internal rot from continued corruption, a situation only made worse by the devolution of health and abuse of power at the grassroots level, it is difficult to fathom just how the government intends to achieve Universal Healthcare for all Kenyans or manage the recently proposed increased charges for the Social Health Insurance Fund. How can we restore trust in a system that is currently ran by an individual hired on allegedly falsified academic qualifications?

Today, I have a conversation with Dr. Hope, Dr. Reign and Dr. Diana, and together, we talk about our personal experiences training and working within this system over the years, the ups and downs, heart-breaking challenges and wins we have all faced. We clarify the difference between medical students, Intern doctors and Residents/Registrars in an attempt to address misconceptions propagated by government officials on social media. We discuss the gross shortcomings of the various healthcare partners and parties involved in propagating the rot. We also attempt to help the middle and upper-class citizens understand exactly how these issues directly affect them in the seemingly prestigious private healthcare system they have access to. Why is healthcare so expensive in Kenya and why does the average Kenyan pay for for services an average of 4 different ways, but still have no access to quality services? We close off by offering advice to our younger colleagues: Medicine is a globally respected and noble profession, and our take home message remains a resounding call not to let the current atrocities lead you to believe that you are not the highly skilled, distinguished, respected and compassionate professional that you truly are.

Welcome to episode 9 of Season 2 on CTRH Podcast. Here, as you know, we endeavour to have real conversations intended to make an actual difference.

Today I am joined by a dear friend and a colleague - Dr. Dorcus Muchiri, to discuss a topic that many have repeatedly requested and one that is still shrouded in mystery as it remains poorly understood and largely unstudied. Join us for a broad discussion on Menopause. What exactly is menopause? How is it diagnosed and what symptoms do we know of? Is menopause occurring in younger women and what is the implication of this on the fertility of today’s career woman? What management options are available during this transition and how best can one navigate the transition away from your reproductive years?

See link in Bio to join our in-depth conversation and together let’s explore how we can better prepare ourselves for this milestone as well as how best to support our family and friends that are going through it.
