Meant specifically for a Mormon audience
I’d love to see the amazing material they have in better hands. The reporter uses so much Mormon in-group language that it reaches bizarre levels. From the clunky way he uses the full 9-word name of the Mormon church throughout (something the Mormon prophet insists his followers do) to demonizing people who leave Mormonism (suggesting Steve’s behavior is a natural byproduct of leaving his church), to referring to Steve as “apostate” and discussing his “worthiness” to baptize Josh. The reporter likewise changes the inflection of his voice and adds ham-fisted background music to tell the audience how to feel when it should be obvious from the material. It’s similar to the way I read bedtime stories to my young children - giving added verbal cues to help them understand the meaning better. Josh won’t let his girlfriend do something - reporter sad. Josh’s sister marries in the temple - reporter happy.

This is an interesting case but I find all the “anti-Mormon” talk strange. The podcasters bias is obvious and I think it takes away from the podcast. As if somehow being Mormon or not sets you on a “path” to murder your family? It’s not the information but the way it’s submitted I find to be off.

The story telling skills of Mr Cawley are on full display here and will keep you...Read full review »
