“This is the fascinating backstory to an infamous unsolved case - a young mother’s disappearance and the cloud of suspicion over the sociopath husband. While the stories of his youth and weird family do shed light, there are just too many details throughout. The minutiae quickly bog down the podcast and ultimately are mostly useless to the story (and listeners’ time). This podcast needs some heavy slashing at the editing desk. Could easily be reduced to 10 episodes and not more than an hour apiece. Then there is the narrator’s style. In a word, terrible. This guy comes off as smug and opinionated, always using a suggestive tone to lead the listener to his conclusion or idea instead of having the listener form their own, which is half the fun of listening to a crime story. Whether it’s barely veiled sarcasm, or a little laugh, or using a kid’s voice, or a pregnant pause, or cheesy sound effects, please cut the drama and give it at least the appearance of even-toned journalism. I listen to a lot of these true crime podcasts and other narrators deliver the story in a way that at least sounds somewhat unbiased. That way the listener can form their own opinions and have their own Aha! moments unfold apace instead of having Mr. Persuasion hitting them in the face with his foregone conclusions. It takes the fun out of it.”
