“This series came at a time when the podcast market was still relatively primitive. Back then they were one of the few Beatles podcasts, yet even then were captivating listening.
Now, with so much choice of Beatles (and other podcast) listening available - I think they are even more essential. Not only is there a great dynamic between Ian and David (as well as some thought provoking debates), I don’t believe there are many Beatles podcasts that can possibly have such an informed and logical perspective on the albums and the band as this one.
The research, trivia and insight is absolutely second-to-none and Ian’s interesting - occasionally contrarian - perspective ensures David’s highly informed but slightly biased view becomes a touch more rounded. This is all healthy.
Most importantly, the hosts don’t insult the listener. It’s an accessible chronicle of each nook and cranny of the Beatles rise to unparalleled success and what made them (unequivocally) the greatest band ever - probably forever.
The only thing I can’t quite understand is how Ian doesn’t become more than just a ‘casual listener’ by the end after learning and understanding more about them with everything we learn together over the series!!
Otherwise, this podcast is brilliant if you are a music (and particularly if you are a Beatles) fan. Even hardcore fans like I think I am will learn a lot from listening to these episodes. So much so that on a third listen - eight years after they were first published - they still hold up and are still the ideal complement to the music, the films and the books. And I’m still learning things the third time round that are either new or that I had forgotten. It enhances listening to the albums so much once you get all the background.
Can’t recommend highly enough. Great work lads. Just discovered your Marx Brothers episodes and can’t wait to get stuck into them.
PS - an additional episode on Get Back would be welcome now we know how ‘Let It Be’ should have been presented! Here’s hoping?”
