Welcome to The Curious Ahjuma podcast. I’m your host Shinhong. I’m a 40-something Ahjuma, which is the Korean word for older Korean lady. But this podcast isn’t about getting old. It’s about embracing curiosity. I’m curious about a lot of things but for most of my life, I’ve shooed my curiosity away like it was frivolous. What I’m realizing is that that’s a big mistake. So I’m finally letting myself be curious. Especially about people. I’m curious about your story of resilience, empowerment, suffering, triumph. How did you get there and why? Join me as I interview different people to hear their unique stories and let’s build a community of curious minds.

Episode 9: Andy Lowe and His Pioneering Spirit in Asian American Theatre

Episode 9: Andy Lowe and His Pioneering Spirit in Asian American Theatre

When Andy started his theatre career in San Diego in the mid 90s, there were little to no roles for Asian Americans in the theatre space.  So just like a true pioneer, he refused to accept the closed doors and created his own.  Today he has paved the way for so many Asian American actors in the US and now he is the Director of Production and Casting at East West Players in Los Angeles.  I'm grateful for people like Andy who have so much grit and vision.

Episode 6: Alex and Carrie talk about childhood cancer

Jared Barbick the Artist, the Teacher, the Activist

Jared Barbick the Artist, the Teacher, the Activist

I would love for Jared Barbick to toot his own horn more because he is truly inspirational and just a genuinely good, thoughtful human being.  But he is too humble for that.  Listen to our talk about his childhood struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder, refusing to be put into a box, and his ultimate rise in art and teaching.

Love every episode and can’t wait for more. Each person’s story is so unique and fascinating, but so relatable. Shinhong’s interview style is easy going and even though she covers some serious issues she is able to expertly draw out the strength, compassion, reliance, sorrow, hope and joy that binds our human experiences together.

Curious

Shinhong’s podcasts are a brutally honest compendium of people’s lives - the great and the disappointing, the tragedies and great coincidences, including her own. She lets people speak their own truths, and if you give the time the guests’ tales recapture the true meaning of storytelling through authentic voices.
