Ep. 21: Identity Change and the Role Our Identity Plays When Given a Diagnosis with Dr. Morley

Ep. 21: Identity Change and the Role Our Identity Plays When Given a Diagnosis with Dr. Morley

When you received your diagnosis, you were flooded with a mix of emotions- relief, anxiety, fear, maybe even hopefulness. At that moment, you reached a fork in the road. You could let this diagnosis define you, let it become a part of your identity, let it control your life or you could take this as a new challenge, one that would not letget the better of you.

What makes someone choose one path versus the other? This is the question I have been trying to answer for the last 7 years and was one of the reasons I started the Diagnosis Redefined Podcast.

This episode contains some major clues that will help answer that very question. In this episode, I interview Dr. Morgan April Morley. Dr. Morley is a professor of Communication Studies who researches how our identity affects and reflects our health and well-being. Most recently, her research has been focused on the multiple ways individuals’ identities change after chronic illness diagnosis and how those changes impact psychological well-being and treatment adherence. Her research has been presented at national conferences and published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. In addition to her research, she also teaches classes in health communication, research methods, and interpersonal communication at California State University, Sacramento. Dr. April Morley's career in academia is directly connected to her Lupus diagnosis and her desire to give voice to those living with chronic conditions.

    In this episode we discuss:
the role of identityhow we develop our identityhow that identity is affected when receiving a diagnosisthe power of labels on our identitywhat we can do to shift our identity if we desireIf you have recently received a diagnosis and feel like you are spiraling because of the fear of having to let go of your identity, this episode is for you!

Ep. 20: Navigating the Conventional Healthcare System for Healing with Dr. Kara Wada

Ep. 20: Navigating the Conventional Healthcare System for Healing with Dr. Kara Wada

So many of us want to be able to implement holistic, functional approaches to our disease, but the access to a functional medicine practitioner is just not there. There may not be any functional medicine practitioners in your area or they may be really expensive. Unfortunately, most of us are dependent on the current insurance model of health care, the conventional medical system. So how do we navigate this system and still find the healing we are looking for in a way that gives us the agency over our bodies that we deserve?

That’s what we are talking about today with Dr. Kara Wada. Dr. Wada is a Quadruple board-certified pediatric and adult allergy immunology & lifestyle medicine physician, Sjogren’s patient and life coach, who shares her recipe for success combining anti-inflammatory lifestyle, trusting therapeutic relationships, modern medicine & our minds to harness our body’s ability to heal.

In this episode, we discuss her healing journey and how her perspective has changed since becoming an autoimmune patient herself. And She gives great practical tips for autoimmune warriors to be able to better communicate with their doctors and make sure they are getting the care they deserve in a system that doesn’t allow most doctors to take more than 8 minutes per office visit.

Ep. 19: Relief Redefined- The Power of Therapeutic Devices in Managing Arthritis w/ Caitlin West

In this episode, Erica Anderson interviews Caitlin West, who is the founder of Alivio Technologies, Inc. a company on a mission to close the loop with arthritis flare up management.

As someone who has inflammatory arthritis herself, Caitlin knows first hand how debilitating the disease can be and she knows what is needed to manage flare up triggers.

She is an autoimmune warrior, who has taken her pain and turned into her passion and is doing incredible things for the arthritis community. She has seen huge improvements in her pain management through the use of therapeutic devices and has created one of her own that combines 3 therapies in one and is wearable so you can use it when you need it. She is also passionate about raising awareness about arthritis to help not only arthritis warriors reduce their pain and improve their mobility, but also the friends and loved ones of these warriors who may not understand how they can best support friends when they are in pain. She does this through webinars and in-person seminars, one of which is coming up November 2nd in Philadelphia.

Ep. 16: How to Stop Your Autoimmune Diagnosis From Ruining Your Relationship with Marriage Coach Beth Miller

Ep. 16: How to Stop Your Autoimmune Diagnosis From Ruining Your Relationship with Marriage Coach Beth Miller

In this episode,  Marriage Coach Beth Miller, shares her tips for having and maintaining a strong, secure relationship when going through a new autoimmune diagnosis. When  a partner gets sick, it creates a dramatic shift in the dynamics of a relationship and can leave either partner feeling ignored or misunderstood. That, along with the new physical and mental limitations, can cause a rift in a relationship that is hard to mend. Beth shares tips from both her professional experience that has helped many women on the verge of divorce, and her own personal experience when she suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and more recently when her son received a new Celiac's diagnosis.

Beth Miller is the founder of Soulify Wellness, a Marriage Coach, a Teacher of Psychology, Certified Hypnotist and Reiki Energy Practitioner.

She has appeared in major media publications such as Maclean’s Magazine, CTV, the London Free Press and has been a guest on dozens of podcasts & blogs.
Beth has coached many women who are on the verge of divorce, and helped them transform their lives and marriages, into relationships filled with mutual love, connection and support.

Her method is deeply rooted in psychology and neuroscience.

One of her secret weapons is Hypno-Journeying, a deep meditation that has been referred to as “meditation on steroids” that helps women to release and reprogram limiting beliefs that have been keeping them stuck in relationship struggles.

Her methods were  inspired by  her own  healing journey after experiencing a brain bleed that left her unable to walk, write, and with  Crippling anxiety and depression.
    - She now views this life-changing experience as a gift!
    - Her life was flipped upside down, but she now sees it as right side up
