Episode 7. Dolly Parton’s America
This episode made me sad. There are discrimination laws against everything related to someone’s inherit qualities (race, color, ethnicity, and even foreign accents). But, for some ungodly reason, the South is fair game for any and all insults. I’m a 1st generation Californian, and all my relatives/ancestors are from the South. My parents were encouraged to lose their accents as were the students in this episode. Diversity of culture is great. Somehow the South doesn’t count. Our world is becoming so homogeneous that you can travel to almost anywhere in the world and things are depressingly similar. Ironically, the students have tried so hard to rid themselves of their southern accent, only to replace it with such a constant stream of “likes” and other filler words that it made me laugh and want to cry at the same time. Other than that, it was great!
