“There are these little programs used in information security called cryptographic hash functions. Into the function you pass an input, called a “message,” which it processes then returns an output, called a “digest.” I like to think of "Don’t Let It Go...Unheard" as a kind of hash function for weekly news, into which passes the messages of current events and out of which comes a nicely encapsulated digest, processed through the program of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism.
Personally, I find it rather difficult to ingest the news in its raw form, unpalatable as it is, spouting from mouthpieces of modern pop culture. I can’t listen any more to MSNBC or CNN or Fox or radio talk shows or the networks. There’s too much yelling, too many sound bites with too little context, not to mention derision, condescension and misplaced self-assurance. It seems that even when they get the story right, they get the meaning wrong. Yet I like to stay informed about the world around me since, after all, I live in it!
And so I write this review with gratitude to Amy and Bosch for creating their podcast. They take in all those messages and, in an informative way, pass on an entertaining little digest processed through a wholesome sense of life.
What’s more, I enjoy the show despite the fact that my particular interests (economics, cycling, old TV and movies) do not coincide with theirs (law, privacy, comics, basketball and new TV and movies). I guess it’s the way they can tie together disparate threads into a meaningful and cogent whole that makes the show compelling.
Finally, for those of you who are irritated by Bosch’s style, I think your annoyance is misplaced. True, he can cause Amy to lose her train of thought now and again with a poorly timed non sequitur, but if you listen to the few episodes when he’s not there, it’s not as lively. The pace and flow of the show is (paradoxically?) diminished. Perhaps if you think of Bosch as a color man who supplements Amy’s play-by-play -- a Cosell to her Gifford; a Madden to her Summerall -- your opinion will soften. ‘Nuff said!”
