196: Beyond the Prescription: Keeping the Pounds Off After Stopping Weight Loss Medication with Chef Steph

The disease of obesity will require a lifelong fight and many different treatment modalities. With the advancements in medication and care, anti-obesity drugs like Zepbound and Wegovy are positioned to become viable options for bariatric patients in their pre and post-operative stages. But what happens if you lose access to these medications? Will you regain some or all of the weight you lost while taking these powerful and effective drugs?

In this episode, BariNation CoFounder April sat down with BariNation Expert and Professional Chef Stephanie Mitchell, a bariatric patient and professional chef who shares her experience with GLP-1 medication and life after stopping it. Stephanie discusses her journey on the medication, the challenges she faced after stopping it, and how she has maintained the low weight that she achieved while on Mounjuaro.

The conversation highlights the importance of mindset, self-acceptance, and constant self-reflection in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Stephanie emphasizes having conversations with oneself, setting goals, and staying accountable. The episode also touches on the bariatric community's and BariNation's power in providing support and guidance. In this conversation, she discusses the importance of maintaining healthy habits and mindset after bariatric surgery. She has learned to lean into BariNation’s Pillars of Bariatric Success of Movement, Mindset, Metabolic Wellness, and Community when things started to feel overwhelming.

If you have been thinking about onboarding an anti-obesity medication but are worried about what could happen if you ever stop taking medication, this powerful episode is for you. We hope you leave this conversation knowing that you can maintain your low weight, with or without medication; you have the tools you need to find lasting success.

195: Don't Know Where to Begin? Your Beginner's Guide to Bariatric Movement with Monique Coleman, CFI

Moving our bodies is a BariNation Pillar of Bariatric Success, but it is one that so many people struggle with. We know it is essential for short-term recovery and long-term success, but finding joyful movement, building a practice, and sticking with it can be challenging.

In this episode, April, Jason, and Natalie sat down with BariNation Movement Expert Monique Coleman to understand where we can start when we don’t even know where the start line is. Each shares their personal movement struggles and the strategies they will use during BariNation’s Spring Into Summer Movement Challenge.

To cross the start line, we have to begin by addressing our movement mindset and understanding what we are telling ourselves about movement. We can embrace starting small and shifting our definition of movement to help us begin where we are, not where we were with movement before surgery or how we hope to move.

If you have been wanting to move more but are finding it hard to start, this conversation is for you! And if you think moving with fellow patients and friends would motivate you, join our Spring Into Summer Movement Challenge. Visit https://barination.mn.co to join the Support Community and participate in the Challenge. You've got this, and we've got you!

192- Move Your Mind: How Exercise Can Boost Your Mental Wellbeing with Daryl Perry

192- Move Your Mind: How Exercise Can Boost Your Mental Wellbeing with Daryl Perry

We know that movement is one of the most important things we need to focus on after bariatric surgery; it’s even one of BariNation’s Pillars of Bariatric Success. We also know that it can be one of the hardest Pillars to live because of the role exercise played in our lives before bariatric surgery. If movement was how we “punished” ourselves for food-related decisions, we might not be overjoyed to start moving again.

We sat down with Daryl Perry, ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Habit-Based Nutritional Coach, and founder of You Level Fitness to understand the connection between mental health and movement. We want to know what we can do when we know what we need to do but are having a hard time doing it. Our discussion explored some of the elements or things we might be inviting into our lives (looking at you, social media) that could be negatively impacting movement and shared how comparison and unrealistic expectations keep us stuck.

We hope you leave this episode inspired to look at the things in your life that could be holding you back from moving more and adopting some new mindsets around movement that pull you towards more activity!

Members of the BariNation Support Community and our Patreon supporters of the BariNation Podcast will get access to the amazing Bonus Episode with Daryl. He shares more about his personal wellness journey and how weight has impacted his life.

191: Maximizing Comfort- Powerful Pain Management Strategies After Bariatric Surgery with Dr. Lucian Panait

191: Maximizing Comfort- Powerful Pain Management Strategies After Bariatric Surgery with Dr. Lucian Panait

Every bariatric patient thinks about pain management during their pre-operative journey. We worry about what the pain will feel like after surgery and how we will manage it. It can be something we are nervous about even talking with our surgeon about because we don’t want to seem pushy or rude, or we could be afraid to bring it up because we don’t want to seem desperate for relief. And with millions of Americans and their families impacted by the opioid epidemic, it can be a scary topic.

Pain management is something we need to consider and discuss with our surgical care team. Ensuring that we can recover at home with minimal pain and have a management plan that we can follow is critical to our short- and long-term success.

We sat down with Dr. Lucian Panait, a bariatric surgeon who strives to ensure his patients are empowered to onboard a pain management plan that is right for them. In this episode, he explains why having a solid pain management plan before surgery is so necessary and gives us questions we can ask our surgeon and care team in our pre-operative appointments. He also teaches us about non-opioid pain management products that we can ask for and request to maximize our recovery time after surgery.

We know you will leave this episode feeling empowered to create a pain management plan with your care team that is right for you!

We are so thankful that Pacira BioSciences, Inc., the maker of EXPAREL, has sponsored this episode. Their sponsorship allows us to ensure that this important educational content can reach you and positively impact your bariatric and surgical journey. Visit YourXFactor.com to learn more about EXPAREL, the pain medication Jason received during this recent bariatric revision surgery.

If you are a member of the BariNation Support Community or a $5 a month Patreon supporter of this podcast, your Bonus Episode with Dr. Panait will dive deeper into creating a pain management plan that works for you.

About our Guest: Dr. Lucian Panait is a general surgery specialist and bariatric weight loss surgeon at the North Memorial Health Hospital and Minnesota Hernia Center in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Panait is also the president of the Minnesota Bariatric Center and has 24 years of experience specializing in general surgery, bariatric surgery, and laparoscopic surgery. Since specializing in laparoscopic gastric bypass or sleeve surgeries, as well as revisions, Dr. Panait is well-versed in bariatric procedures.
