It’s interesting buuuut…
No doubt, this podcast is fascinating! I’m finishing up the episode on the Khmer empire so I’ve still got a ways to go. I’m also hoping things change a bit as far as the meta narrative (something I realize is unavoidable when talking about the fall of civilizations and history in general). Namely, there are a LOT of references to the U.S. and how the U.S. is doing the same thing as this or that failed civilization did. I’m American so maybe I’m a bit sensitive to it (and yes many parallels can certainly be made to my country and failed civilizations) I also can’t help but feel it’s a bit rich of a Brit to be so ready to throw stones, glass houses being what they are. I mean I’d love to hear an episode on the decline of the British empire! Also, this podcast has a tendency to leave out information about how some of these civilizations are still living today. At least with reference to the Mayan civilization, Chichen Itza is still being used in sacred religious ceremonies by Mayans who are still alive today. It would have been nice to hear about how some of these people have survived and maintained their traditions throughout the centuries. Again I’m only on episode 5 so maybe things change, narrative wise. But those are my main complaints so far. Other than that, it’s a super informative podcast and I definitely recommend it to anyone whose interested in history but only has a vague knowledge base of these civilizations.
