Having transitioned from extremely conservative politics and religion to left-leaning views, I believe Donald Trump is the key factor or data point being ignored. The left's disdain for Trump is less about differing political views with his followers and more about opposing him personally. Trump is a divisive figure exploiting a political platform without being a true politician.
