This is a must for any football fan of whatever persuasion. Sensible discussions and the in depth interviews with players or managers are very insightful.

An informative and interesting football podcast that cuts out the inane tomfoolery so prevalent on mainstream outlets these days. The interviews are level-headed, the topics current and relevant. This is always worth a listen.

Since the change of format the pod has really gone downhill!! And the odd time Newcastle do get a mention usually Mike and Miguel Delaney just talk about Saudi Arabia and sportwashing and how much money Newcastle has spent! Nothing saying how good Howe has been and that six of the team were...Read full review »

Love the show but I disagree with your take on the World Cup system. The system is obviously there to represent a continent like Africa who is under represented and many other and for the matches it just one additional match and 1 week more how is that really bad. I know fifa is bad but I think...Read full review »

Pep
Thanks for a good show. Under this weeks interview you asked Pep how long he would be managing Man City. I personally think if he had already won the champions league with city he wouldn’t be there now. His goal is to win the champions league with them and then step down.

Really informative and I love Mike. I like the new format too, I’ve listened for years so it’s keeping things fresh.

Same show just with more content! Love the interviews

The old format was so much better 😢

Not bothered about the interviews, can get those elsewhere.

I used to love the previous format. It was so, so much more interesting than any of the competitors similar formatted podcasts. Now Mike seems more interested in forcing how interesting, decent and intelligent each of the interviewees are. What used to be an intelligent, forthright and...Read full review »

Mike I was a big fan of the Football Writers Pod and so far am loving the new Format of Football people . Look forward to every Thursday. From an Irishman All the way in Brisbane Australia .

Used to be one of my favourite football podcasts last season. This season they spend 15/20 mins talking about this weeks footy (that’s a combination of a review previous week and preview the upcoming fixtures) then some silly interview that should be a podcast on its own that’s got no relevance...Read full review »

Think this is great, different and a very bold move. I miss the original but there are so many football discussion podcasts and I love the fact that Michael is trying something new with the interview feature. The guests are diverse, interesting and I found the Webber and Holt episodes unique and...Read full review »

Guardian, Athletic and Totally Football podcasts far more enquiring, rounded, thoughtful and superior. Reiterating above comment. No analysis of data, just cliche rehashes of tabloid back pages, worst type of group think old school Fleet St journalism. Recent podcasts have majored on the...Read full review »

I used to enjoy the original intelligent discussion format of the pod. It was one of the few that avoided the presence of ex-footballers and the associated “banter”. (Tho it did and does include some ex-footballers, to my mind they are journalists-who-used-to-be-footballers which I think is...Read full review »

I’m new to the pod and its great to have some sensible and intelligent football debate. Listening to Michael is like someone pouring a mixture of liquid gold, honey & grandma’s treacle into my ears. So enjoyable. Keep up the good work!

Football Writers Podcast was 5 stars. New format is really quite poor. Can’t understand why it was changed. Bad decision from a listener perspective.

Enough said really. Very enjoyable.

New format is dull. I used to love the debates among knowledgable guests but the new format is just an interview with some well known and some random guests dropped in. Why not have one debate and one interview as separate episodes? Used to have two per week anyway so not much change. Seems...Read full review »

Huge fan of the pod and like the new format of Mike unpicking the minds of the people at the top of the game. But on the other hand, miss the insight and humour of the regular journalists. Maybe you could do a Tuesday pod, like you used to, and just talk pure football.
podcasters94 via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 08/28/22
Whilst it’s been fascinating having a guest feature and sometimes getting good insight from people involved with the game, I really don’t like the format I really miss the Writer’s Podcast with the breadth of cerebral football talkers you should get on.

Excellent podcast that involving serious journalists discussing the big issues impacting football. Love it.

Would prefer the pod to be current football chat rather than interviews. Could the interview be a separate pod?

The Football Writers Podcast used to be one of my favourites, not a fan of this new ‘spend half the pod interviewing’ format personally

The Football Writers Podcast was good, but this is going to be a must listen. I think the variety of guests will make it very distinctive compared to other football podcasts summarising the weekly action..

If you love the game of football and appreciate thoughtful, considered discussion on it then this is the podcast for you! Can’t wait for next season to come around so I can get back to listening to one of my new favorite podcasts!

I love the distain in Calvin’s voice when he calls Burnleys new American owners “venture capitalists”. Just utter contempt and disgust. I’m sure he’s broadcasting live from his 400sf apartment in a faceless pale yellow building as he says this. He’s just a regular bloke waiting in line for his...Read full review »

Intelligent, measured & thoughtful commentary on premier league and European football. Great host and guests…this is for real football fans who don’t want to hear bombast but prefer the thinking person’s approach to the beautiful game

..but like other football podcasts they’ve decided it’s more important to be ‘diverse’ than to have on the best journalists, regardless of who they are

Take a moment to consider the last half-dozen episodes of this podcast. A perusal of the titles will suffice. Mike Calvin seems to have fallen under Jurgen Klopp’s spell and is engaged in an all out Mersey Charm Offensive. Journalism has been subjugated to a Liverpudlian wankfest. I’ve paused...Read full review »

This used to be consistently my favourite football podcast. Mike Calvin is excellent. Look forward to it each week but when I realise Jordan Jarret Bryan is on I switch off. He talks absolute nonsense which he seems to make up on the spot.

By far the best of the ‘broadsheet pods’ for knowledge and insight. Part way through last year looking like it shook the guest list up and became far more diverse & inclusive. Long may it continue always a decent listen this. Nice one MC.

I listen to football podcasts all week, every day. I’ve just unsubscribed from this. This was always dry but good, but Jordan Jarrett-Bryan is just a loudmouth. Jordan Jarrett-Bryan has come on board and the podcast is unlistenable. He creates brash and arrogant tabloid discussion. Just an awful contributor to a once excellent podcast.

I love the show, always listen and in the main enjoy the chat however I have to say Jordan’s comments on Klopp and vaccination, Shut Up! You’ve made your point! He lost his Mum last year and couldn’t pay his respects, out of order!

Another one of those ‘nobody exists outside of the Sky 6’ podcasts. Really disappointing and surprising as Michael Calvin is involved. Having read all his books I really expected better.

I’ve been a loyal listener to the Football Writer’s podcast for the past three years.
