One of my favorite podcasts
I look forward to listening every week. Hemant and Jessica are a great team, tackling a range of news topics from an atheist perspective with compassion for the underdogs (both atheist and religious) and punch-up humor for the oppressively pious. Jessica Bluemke is at least half the reason I love this podcast. Her quick wit makes the usual stories of religious misdeeds more fun, or at least more bearable. And when the stories are deeply upsetting, she helps me know I’m not alone in my own reactions. She also occasionally pushes back on something Hemant says in a thoughtful and fair-minded manner. I also really liked the bonus episode interviews that I’ve heard her do with the co-director of “Murder Among The Mormons” (4/13/21) and I was surprised by how much I also loved her interview with her own father (3/29/21). (I don’t know her, never met her or her dad, and her dad’s not famous or anything, but what a wonderful interview that was.) Hemant Mehta is wonderful as well, he digs stories up that others don’t find, and his attention to background research really shows. One example that I found particularly moving was his commentary on the David Brooks NYT opinion piece: how evangelical ‘dissenters’ trying to ‘save’ the faith have their own problems (2/10/22 episode 413). One tiny segment among many, it just is a small example of how much work he puts into what he does. It’s taped without editing, so expect the hosts to occasionally talk over one another. It happens, not a big deal, but if that bothers you, this might not be the show for you. Also, probably not if you’re religious, politically rightward leaning, or hold some unexamined misogynistic attitudes.
