“Before stating a mild critique below, let this be said: this podcast is very well done and engagingly presented. I should also say that this review only pertains to season 3, about Falwell and Liberty, and that I haven’t listened to the others.
While at times the reporting paints Christianity in general and Republican-affiliated Christians with a too-broad brush, by the last episode of the season there is a tacit recognition that moral conservatism and evangelical Christianity are not the root problem, and can be expressed in ways that avoid the evils of Falwell, Liberty, et al. For example, the narrator often mentions those who lost their faith after leaving Liberty, but also interviews (without narrating the significance) those who rejected Liberty’s expression of Christianity while maintaining biblical faith. In the end, a balance is struck in this regard, but not because of the narration, only because of certain interviewees (the LU student newspaper journalists and student government personnel, most notably). This slant notwithstanding, this season is important for American Christians to hear in order to understand (1) sexual assault victims and what they need from Christian institutions, and (2) what christian Trumpism has done to Christian public image.”
