“Such a confusing take on The Witch. There was no explanation as to why you guys thought the family was somehow harshly judged by the director? Eggers actually spoke on this during the Reddit AMA and said that he loves them as a family and doesn’t judge them, especially William. As I watched, they were all sympathetic and human. It’s just really tragic, it never felt like they were getting what they deserved. IDK why anyone would think “oh they’re so stupid they didn’t know it was a witch.” Isn’t that crazy to assume? And grief is kind of hard to deal with in the first week of death.
Also, I think general fear of sin in the self is just what puritanism is, so it just make sense they would turn suspiciously inward. They think they are at fault for everything bad that happens. Also they are generally fearful of a blooming feminine presence (which is a fear that played a part in inventing the witch idea in the first place) and that is like a self-fulfilling prophecy, especially when there are so few options in a puritan environment.
Also why was authentic dialect somehow a major problem? A sarcastic “Congratulations”? What was so angering about the whole thing...”
