Did you know that some households in Asan don't put tika on the Dashami? Likewise, even within the Newa community, residents of Khokana don't celebrate Dashain. Instead, they celebrate Sikali Jatra, a five-day-long festival with enthusiasm and fervour.   For years, Dashain has been celebrated as the festival for commemorating the victory of goodness over the evil. Then why in the name of the festival the act of killing animals to please the divine gods and goddesses take place?  Why do people put red tika and why are certain functions performed on the specific fifteen days of Dashain. Is Dashain a sexist and a casteist festival?  Why do people fly kites during the festival? Does the change in the season have any connection to the festival? How is the festival celebrated in a rural and an urban setting?
