“Love the podcast and enjoyed Andy not backing down from his list. While I do feel your justification for all your player rankings were sound I still feel your Pro Kobe argument was pretty weak so I wanted to share one of my own.
I understand your point in terms of how without a name attached statistically Curry wins but my main critique with your Player A or Player B argument is it fails to factor in the defenses each player was going up against.
For example just looking at the defensive rating of the teams Curry and Kobe faced in the finals you can see that on his finals runs without Shaq Kobe consistently faced better defenses in the Western Playoffs and in the NBA Finals. You could argue that the only defensive minded team Curry has played in the Finals was this years Raptors team while during the 3 finals runs Kobe had all of his finals opponents were grinding defensive focused teams not conducive to putting up the efficient offensive stats Curry has been able to post.
Also while I understand the idea/narrative of KD being over Kobe I do feel we need perspective on KD and how joining GS inflated his playoff numbers.
Kobe w/o Shaq
[ 29.3PPG on 46.1/33.7/84 & 50 EFG%]
KD in OKC
[ 28.5PPG on 45.5/32.9/84.8 & 50.3 EFG%]
I know he was playing next to a high usage guy in Russ but the noticeable drop off in efficiency in comparison to his regular season play is important.
(Kobe was never the model of efficiency but his Playoff numbers in comparison to Regular season always remained constant or slightly went up)
Plus you could argue that while they were giving you identical offensive output Kobe in the playoffs gave you more defensive consistency than KD ever did before joining GS.
Before joining the Warriors he was putting up Kobe numbers and nothing was wrong with that until he joined and that system gave him the spacing to put up these Top 5-like numbers. Again nothing is wrong with that but I do think we need to acknowledge that before we start putting Durant over other players simply bc of his insane efficiency.
Again just wanted to add my two cents in as a semi-logical Kobe fan who doesn’t hate analytics.”
