In this episode, Dr. Danielle answers three questions related to women's health. She discusses how to shorten long menstrual cycles, the relationship between high testosterone and PCOS, and the best exercises for women with PCOS. She emphasizes the importance of comprehensive testing to identify the underlying causes of long cycles and high testosterone. Dr. Danielle also provides recommendations for strength training and walking as effective exercises for women with insulin-resistant PCOS, and suggests lower impact workouts like Pilates and yoga for other types of PCOS.

    Takeaways

Long menstrual cycles, lasting more than 35 days, can be caused by delayed ovulation, often related to insulin resistance, excess adrenal androgens, or inflammation.
Comprehensive testing is important to identify the underlying causes of long cycles and high testosterone, including insulin levels, adrenal androgens, thyroid function, and prolactin levels.
High testosterone does not always mean you have PCOS. PCOS is diagnosed based on high testosterone, irregular cycles, and polycystic ovaries seen on ultrasound.
For women with insulin-resistant PCOS, strength training and walking are recommended to improve insulin resistance and glucose metabolism.
For other types of PCOS, lower impact workouts like Pilates and yoga can be beneficial, as they help lower cortisol levels and reduce inflammation.
Finding an exercise routine that is enjoyable and sustainable is key for long-term management of PCOS.

In this episode, Dr. Danielle interviews Dr. Lauren Steinman, a SIBO expert, about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and its impact on hormonal health and fertility. They discuss the symptoms of SIBO, the different types of SIBO, and the root causes of the condition. They also explore the testing and treatment options for SIBO, including antibiotics and herbal remedies. Dr. Lauren emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of SIBO and working with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach. She also provides tips for preventing relapses and recommends abdominal massage for supporting gut motility.

    About Dr. Lauren Steinman:

"Having grown up in Germany, I had the great fortune to experience a holistic style of medicine from an early age.

This inspired me to study at the oldest naturopathic medical school in the US (The National University of Natural Medicine), in Portland Oregon. During my four year doctoral training, I underwent rigorous classroom and clinical training, and spent extra time focusing my clinical education on women's health and digestive health.

SIBO is my clinical focus and I am one of a handful of experts treating this condition in Europe. Having suffered from SIBO myself, I know how frustrating it can be. In my 7 years of practice I have treated thousand of SIBO patients. Most of my patients come to me after a long and difficult journey with their gut health and travel to my practice from all over Germany and Europe. I am passionate about treating this complex condition and training healthcare providers in the specifics of SIBO.

In Germany I am licensed to practice as a Heilpraktiker due to differences in medical licensing. "

    Takeaways

SIBO is an acronym for small intestine bacterial overgrowth, a condition where bacteria migrate from the large intestine to the small intestine and cause an overgrowth.
Symptoms of SIBO include bloating, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea or constipation, reflux, nausea, and systemic symptoms like joint pain and brain fog.
The three types of SIBO are hydrogen-dominant, methane-dominant (also known as EMO), and hydrogen sulfide-dominant.
Testing for SIBO is typically done through a breath test, with lactulose being the preferred test substance.
Treatment options for SIBO include antibiotics (such as rifaximin, neomycin, and metronidazole) and herbal remedies (such as oregano extract, garlic extract, and neem).
It is important to address the root causes of SIBO, such as motility issues, food poisoning, hypothyroidism, and stress.
Relapses of SIBO are common, with a 40-70% relapse rate. It is important to work with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach and focuses on relapse prevention.
The low FODMAP diet can provide symptomatic relief in the short term, but it is not a long-term solution and should not be followed for more than three months.
Additional tests that may be helpful for SIBO include markers of inflammation (such as CRP and calprotectin) and markers of gut permeability (such as zonulin and IFABP).
Finding a practitioner who specializes in SIBO and takes a holistic approach is important for effective treatment and long-term management of the condition.

In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the hormone DHEAS and its importance in fertility. DHEAS is a hormone made in the adrenal glands and is converted from DHEA. Testing DHEAS levels can provide a better understanding of DHEA production and adrenal function. While high DHEAS levels are common in women with PCOS, low DHEAS levels can be found in those struggling with infertility. Low DHEAS levels can lead to low estrogen levels, irregular or absent ovulation, and thin uterine lining. DHEA supplementation can improve egg quality, ovarian function, and fertility outcomes.

Love this podcast!

I hav struggled with PCOS my whole life and regular doctors have always told me the same things and never given me real tools to help my symptoms! Dr Danielle gives great applicable advice and teaches about so many things most girls would never know about!

Erin Matzko ,

PCOS finally explained!

I am so happy to have found this podcast; I have blazed through most of these episodes over the past month! As someone who was just recently diagnosed with PCOS, and given no direction from my doctor or any treatment options, this podcasts has been an absolute lifesaver.. I have begun to implement much of Dr. Danielle’s advice, like making a protein rich smoothie for breakfast or walking after meals, and have begun to see improvements in my energy levels, mood, and even my cravings! I have already recommended this podcast to two of my other coworkers with PCOS. Thank you, Dr. Danielle, for your wealth of PCOS related knowledge and for empowering me to no longer feel powerless to make any changes. 🤍
