Why do commercials interrupt in the middle of a sentence and even - as in the episode on Walls - in the middle of a word? Moreover, there are extended blank spaces in the Walls episode where information has been erased, clearly accidentally. This is not the only episode I've heard that has...Read full review »

May be just a fluke but this podcast was terrible. Wasted nearly a half hour waiting for two self indulged individuals bloviating and never getting to the point. Was a special Saturday episode for history daily and had high hopes based on the topic.

Always fascinating and full of thought provoking content. Could the introductions of each other at the beginning be shorter?

As I drive along country roads in New South Wales, Australia, I am consistently entertained and informed by Sam and James. It is a privilege to hear such well informed and well researched material on unusual subjects. Thank you guys.

Thoroughly enjoy the episodes.

What a strange podcast. The hosts nattered on about Hitler. They’re fascinated they said. They shared an anecdote about Hitler in which they refer to him as a “great” and “famous” man. I’m listening to this podcast one short week after Trump tried to overturn an election in the United States,...Read full review »

This is an amazing podcast. I love it! The homeschooling episodes were invaluable for my kids during lockdown when schools were closed. Funny, accessible and aligned to the national curriculum. Thanks guys!

Sam and James are obviously very passionate about what they do and it comes through in the podcast. I live in Australia and like the fact that you look beyond Britain with interesting stories from around the world.

It’s a great concept and an interesting podcast but they just repeat the same facts over and over again. I’ve heard the same quote about an enslaved man being whipped a good half a dozen times now.

Absolutely faultless and makes history accessible to all.

It could be a little less woke for my liking, which can bit a bit annoying, apart from that very enjoyable.

I lost my love of history after Corn Laws at school but rediscovered my love of history because of this. There’s such a interesting variety of topics discussed with such enthusiasm 😃.

Amazing to see a podcast that looks at history from a completely different perspective. One of my absolute favourite history podcasts!

Really great podcast. History made fun. It’s unique, interesting and insightful and it’s piloted by two superb and credible historians. I’m a history geek, but others who aren’t who’ve overheard the pod have found themselves equally gripped and intrigued.

I could listen to Sam and Dave talk about the history of the most random subjects all day long.

I love listening to the stories about something but really nothing. Reminds me a little of the classic connections with James Burke. Linking obscure ideas together to make a show. As someone who has a Masters in History, I love to know more and this podcast does that for me.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode. The depth of research that is obviously done makes this podcast engaging and the humor thrown in keeps it from ever becoming boring. This is one of the highlights of my week. Keep up the good work!

Started with their Trafalgar episode and half or more was talking about the things they would like to talk about rather than talking about Trafalgar. Maybe I’ll give them a second chance but so far not impressed.

Certainly have to get to the show notes to appreciate everything. I imagine that's still challenging- no, impossible, on the native player but is another reason I love Overcast. Navigating to the show notes isn't a problem for me anymore so I get much more out of podcasts. Love their...Read full review »

This is such a great podcast. James and Sam are super keen about everything they talk about, and their enthusiasm for history, especially the lesser known corners of it, or more unusual aspects, is infectious.

I have just happened across this podcast and it’s fabulously entertaining. The passion they have and links they find are a wonderful way to engage audiences to think creatively. This would be wonderful for students to listen to when learning in primary and high school. Great work.

...But the gentlemen seem to constantly forget they're working with an aural medium. "As you can see here" - well, no, alas I cannot. "Look at the color of that!" Well, no, sorry, can't. They do describe the pictures they're looking at, and there are show notes out...Read full review »

The hosts describe their show as “audio googling” through history, and that’s a pretty apt description. It reminds me of the old show on PBS (in the USA) James Burke’s “Connections,” which traced the history of technology. Even if you’re not usually interested in History, give this podcast a...Read full review »

These guys don’t let you forget they are academics and hence qualified to yabber on about anything. Sometimes they do a great job having researched it well although at other times it is too overblown and despite their hyperactive way of speaking, it is dull and longwinded.

I've studied history both academically and as a hobby for 20+ years. This podcast manages to touch on different disciplines and time periods with the ease of listening to a conversation over a cuppa. Great podcast for fans of Bill Bryson. Just like Bryson gives you unexpected historical tidbits in his books, these hosts show how each item that we encounter has a deeper history than we expect. The history is unexpected.
