There are some great interviewees on this podcast, but it would really benefit from better editing (some interviews are so hard to listen to with the ums and ers- I can tell it’s because people are nervous, but just edit that out. Other podcasts do it!) and some of the interviewers could do with...Read full review »

I do love the way these podcasts are churned out. But sometimes I just can’t bear the hosts voices. The last one on Shackleton. Ouch. An assault on my ears. It does matter - a lot. The tone of a presenters voice. If a women’s voice is too high pitched it is just not suitable for radio - with some...Read full review »

I love coming here to listen and re listen too, fan of the female speakers more than anything! Grew up listening to just male historians on documentaries so it’s liberating!

Loved this show until this complete joke of an episode. The History of the Ottoman Empire (Aug. 8, 2021) is fall of falsities, double standards, ignores any truth and the “interviewer” is too afraid to ask any real questions. If you’re going to review any European empire from Ancient Greece...Read full review »

Usually the podcasts are of a high standard. However occasionally when a guest has a left wing/cancel agenda the interviewer tends to give them an easy ride. I’m all for different views, challenge long held narratives . But please be balanced.

Great work! Really fascinating! But please note that episode 2 and 3 of the Salem Witch Trials are the same.

I think many people in the bad reviews have far too big expectations for this podcast. To me, it appears to function as an introduction to a wide variety of topics and stories you might have never heard of and not necessarily a deep dive where many tough subjects are brought up. I found this pod...Read full review »

I used to love this podcast and get a particular rush of excitement every time that I saw a new episode drop but sadly no more . The scope of topics used to be broad and the contributors were , on the whole, excellent . Now the range of subjects has narrowed and seems dominated by identity...Read full review »

I would gladly subscribe to history extra paid to remove the ads which are often very loud and annoying, making the episodes un-playable in many circumstances. History extra Plus doesn’t cut it yet because you can’t listen to the 1000+ history extra interviews ad-free, only a limited selection of...Read full review »

I wish someone other than Rob Attar did interviews. He sounds so disinterested and doesn’t really engage with interviewees. There’s no humour or warmth. Not the greatest voice for radio either. It’s a shame because they have some great guests, so it gets four stars.
tiggylegg via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/10/21
Some of the guests are truly excellent. Some are appalling. There’s still a strong “western” (imperialist, white, male) bias in the questions, and among some of the interviewees that is embarrassing and oblivious.
5onalee via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 10/05/21
I love this podcast for the wide array of subjects, many of which I would never seek out on my own, or I didn’t know was a thing. From love and marriage in 14th century Western Europe to Women spies in WWII France. It’s also cool to hear about the actual research and leg work the Historians do in...Read full review »

I always enjoy listening to my podcasts as I settle down to sleep - this particular podcast...started out; quite enjoyable. Why can’t the host, produced before or during the recording tell the guest to slow their speech. Heather Jones was particularly horrible - it was as if the recording has been sped up. It would be comical we’re it not so frustrating. Does anyone involved with producing this podcast listen to it?...Read full review »

This should be called “European History Extra”. In all its years, there have been no episodes about Pol Pot, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara. But it does a good job describing European history. I would still listen of course, but this is not world history.

This is right up there with my favourite podcasts. Always been interested in History & sometimes I get the magazine as well. My only criticism is that the point of view/topics are overly anglosphere oriented but, hey, it does originate from the UK!

The interview shows how terrible a historian can be when his version of history is sanitised and whitewashed. The producers should be ashamed of the trivial approach this person has to issues such as invasion, the legalised oppression of First Nations people, slavery in Australia, and genocide....Read full review »

This is my go-to history podcast. It is interesting, rigorous, and not afraid to be controversial at times. Learning about history is a revelatory and fascinating way of seeing the world we live in today with eyes wide open. Great work, BBC History Extra!

Really enjoyed listening to Tim Maltin answer the listeners’ questions about the Titanic. However I was disappointed with the host, Charlotte Hodgman’s excessive use of the word “um”

Topics and guests are impressive, a truly fantastic range of historic coverage.... but could the hosts PLEASE refrain from the very um um annoying and er er eh eh distracting, um um verbal pauses that pepper their questions? Just focus and deliver what must be prepared comments/questions.....

Enjoying the prime ministers series, usually very enlightening. The Margaret Thatcher episode however seems to have been lifted from The Daily Mail letters page. A poor cliched, fawning piece.
