Very good, much appreciated labor of history, albiet could use a bit of decolonization which I can imagine is hard for someone whois from Kentucky? It is also not anti-colonial which influences the way he talks about anti-colonial efforts as “threats” or “danger”. Otherwise, actually very...Read full review »

Given the sparse podcast content around Southeast Asian history, I really enjoy listening to these well-researched episodes. I'm always eager for more but would like an additional perspective outside the Western one that Charles presents. I hope the presence of this podcast and Charles'...Read full review »

I’ve been wanting to know more about my country and now realise that in order to understand Indonesia, I must understand Southeast Asia. I really am grateful for this detailed narrative. It is exactly what I was looking for. Charles organises the episodes well. His corny humour makes it all the...Read full review »

Thanks for making Southeast Asian history interesting and easy to digest. I have a better appreciation for the history, it’s geopolitical situation today, and how a nation’s memory of the past affects its decisions today in trade and politics. I especially appreciate your efforts in clearing up...Read full review »

Been really enjoying Mr Kimbal’s warm style of delivery - kinda like the nice uncle in your family. The episodes are laid Out and designed in a methodically clear way; the only downside is the trouble one has retaining so much history.

Strictly seen through a lens of Anglo/European historical perspective. completely butchers any pronunciation outside of English but only apologizes to those of the white races. Makes false and erroneous claims that support a conclusion that without French colonization the Laos and Cambodian...Read full review »

Maybe not the deepest podcast around, but it doesn’t need to be. Provides a solid introduction from prehistory to modern times for a region I and I suspect many Europeans don’t know a Lot about.

I may have missed an inflection or mis-heard, but I did rerun the recent 2021 Singapore podcast. Tony Tan’s presidency ended in 2017. Current President is Halimah Yacob.

You don't see much content on the History of Southeast asia. There aren't many documentaries on it as the Roman Empire, and so having a podcast like this by Charles is a godsend! Very well researched, presented, and narrated. Definitely combines entertainment with learning!Read full review »

The content of this podcast is excellent and I like the personality of the presenter. However, the acoustics are horrible and there is a lot of annoying popping noises with certain words so I took of two stars. If not for that, I would give it a five stars.
