He had previously served as Director of the CIA, from 1991 to 1993, Deputy National Security Advisor from 1989 to 1991, and Deputy Director of the CIA from 1986-1989. He is the author of From the Shadows, Duty, A Passion for Leadership, and Exercise of Power: American Failures, Successes, and a New Path Forward in the Post-Cold War World.
