“While this podcast brings up some really important points and has some pretty high profile interviews, I was disappointed as it does feel like it’s interviewing people about more or less about the same talking points of inequality, rather than the systemic inequalities of the business as a whole. Yes, absolutely Hollywood’s historic racial and gender inequalities are of upmost importance to be addressed. But only addressing these issues will scratch the surface of what is intrinsically wrong with Hollywood’s business model, which feeds into these inequalities.
What about its deeply problematic hiring structure? The unpaid internships and full-time assistants who are paid peanuts, exacerbating inequality, creating a pay-to-play environment just for the wealthy, and further displacing minority access?
What about grueling and dangerous 12 hour work days and work place injuries? These stories also need to be told and there’s no doubt the pandemic will change these things in the industry for better or worse, but I really do hope this podcast goes deeper and addresses more of these linked systemic issues with the business. Interviewing big celebs and CEOs is only going to get this show so far.”
