“I just listened to the interview on self directed learning. I think a lot of things were said that would lead children down a dangerous path. We just adopted a 12 year old who had no limits and I can tell you he did not use his unlimited screen time to learn and read when left to himself. The fear I have for completely self directed kids is that they would actually become totally selfish (thinking life is always about what they want) and unable to follow directions and persevere through challenges of life (like college?). Plus most medical studies really stress the need for limits on screen time. With our own son we really see the early lack of limits has developed a huge lack of executive function skills and a lack of self motivation to do hard things. I hope most parents are listening to the AAP over these people.”
