Lacking Some Perspective
I started out listening to this podcast in the pandemic to regain a sense of a “girl group” after missing hanging out with my girlfriends. Unfortunately, there have been way too many episodes where I don’t feel included in the group. I don’t even mean politically. This group totally misses the mark when it comes to incorporating the perspective of younger generations. They either talk down on millennials and Gen Z, or most of the time these generations are noticeably absent. During a summer 2021 episode, they made fun of millennials for aspiring to be homeowners and I couldn’t help but wonder if they forgot the oldest of the millennial generation is now 40? And isn’t Erin a millennial? Recently, a panel said they didn’t think college students were using dating apps- hilarious. Now they’re criticizing Happiest Season as if the world is a totally LGBTQIA+ friendly place, when that’s absolutely not the case (and also shows they missed the entire point of that movie). It’s the same oblivious tone Lil Nas X had to put up with in that 2019 Kevin Hart interview. These are just a few of many times where the Hysteria ladies have failed to relate to their younger listeners, and I’m disappointed. How is that feminism? Please don’t forget we are also part of the workforce and eligible voting population. There’s still so much more intersectional progress to be made and that requires looking out for each other and bridging across multiple generations. Do not dismiss or underestimate your younger counterparts.
