“I had the great pleasure of bumping into Gary today at a small cafe in Sydney.
Utterly star-struck (what a dork!).
He was so gracious and generous with his time. He listened to my incoherent rambling and responded with insight and care.
They say don’t meet your heroes…Not Gary.
To Gary:
I just wanted to take a moment, where I can be more articulate (re: star struck) to coherently thank him for creating content (for free) that has shaped so much of my approach, learning and understanding of criminal justice. My area of study - chosen career path.
Whilst it may seem contradictory, a junior criminal defence lawyer praising the story-telling, shared experience and education imparted to me by a Cop, it isn’t at all!
Social Justice, criminal defence and politics are all interconnected in the administration of justice, democracy, advocacy, social equity and equality.
The building blocks of society.
During this period of social and political upheaval (which in my opinion are long over due) Gary has bought much needed attention to issues facing Indigenous Australians (Bowralville) advocated and celebrated young black women in the industry (Jarin Baignet) and really emphasised to me role of prison, justice and rehabilitation.
Gary, you were so generous with your time, thank you for letting me introduce myself and thank you for all the lessons you have imparted on me, whether you know it or not.
On one level the podcast is great entertainment. Hearing from Crims, Police and everyone in between - its a fantastic listen.
But more than that its a fantastic resource. The podcast, anecdotally, relays so many flaws in the justice system through the view of police, case studies and criminals. The operation of police, their resources and their hardships. And episode by episode it breaksdown the judicial system and the courts.
Perhaps most importantly, Gary’s story-telling tells tales of hope, resilience, honesty and advocacy for people who need it.
Thank you Gary !
-The small blonde girl who harassed you while you were ordering a smoothie.
All the best !”
