Black Mental Health
I am the Black father of a son with mental health issues for several years now. I love my son and have been here for him throughout all of the issues and we have faced them together. I have found that in the beginning it wasn't so much about him, but me, my adjustment to the new reality much like dealing with a relative who has chronic diabetes or another condition that can be difficult to manage. I dont agree with the broad generalizations and framing in this discussion. Black women are no more able to adjust than black men when a child is diagnosed. I think this issue is way more human that racial. I am grateful for the current research that frames the myriad of brain diseases as just that. It is helpful to think of this issue in those terms. Like any other disease you have to address mind, body and spirit and practice what I call positive acceptance. Then you can help your love one accept what is happening with them and be realistic and positive in your supports. Lastly, the medical system provides very little info information for ALL care givers outside of medicine and outside therapy. The practical training, information and supports for families who care for these individuals are very limited. Thats the broken part of the spear. They are just beginning to acknowledge this and put resources into place.Read full review »
