Jonathan's father confronts him about his desire to leave the life of a wealthy Virginia planter behind, and make a stake for himself on the Virginia frontier, and about his love for Nancy Davidson. Jonathan visits Nancy, and is jealous to find her with another man. He makes her a promise, and himself a vow, but can he keep either?
