I loved it… until I didn’t.
When this podcast came out, I loved it. Raved about it! Told so many people to listen. Then came the episode about seeing family at Christmas. They interviewed scientists and relationship experts who gave some very sound and much needed advice about how to deal with difficult family relationships. Stay in a hotel, have preset rules and boundaries about how you’re going to deal with bad situations if they arise. Things people really need to hear; that it’s ok. Sometimes you do need to walk away from abuse. Sometimes you will need to protect yourself and the people you care about. And then… the host cut in with comment, clearly edited in afterwards. It’s been a long time since I listened to this but in essence she said: "Your parents raised you and it’s the least you could do is be grateful at Christmas” What the actual… I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. After 20 minutes of good sound advice from people who know what they’re talking about, from people who understood just how bad it can get… the host is going to cut in with a privileged and ignorant guilt trip? In a podcast about science and education? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about it since. It makes me so angry every single time. I think of all the friends who’ve been thrown out by parents, abused emotionally, financially, physically. I think of the friends who’ve had to move countries, move across the world just to get away and the friends who are still stuck, having to try to cope, in situations beyond their control. I haven’t listened since.Read full review »
