5 Things People Could... Ep. 20 (keeping it real)

5 Things People Could... Ep. 20 (keeping it real)

Are you real with yourself? Were you really busy when you said you were? How often do you want to say no but end up saying yes? Do you ignore your intuition more times than not? Real, realest, realness, reality. All words that essentially lead us to truth. That is, ones own truth substantiated by an observation, a sensory or lived experience. If compared to the idea of love, we can say that most people also have the desire to be real with themselves and with others. Still some grapple with it and find tip toeing around the truth a safer alternative. In this episode of Junubia Girl Talks we came up with 5 things people could be real about. If you're surprised by our answers, agree or even disagree we'd like to hear from you. Find us @JunubiaGirlTalks on all socials and let us know what things you think people could be real about and which of the ones we listed resonate with you.

A Conversation with Manasseh Mathiang: Artist/Activist

A Conversation with Manasseh Mathiang: Artist/Activist

Just like the melodies from your favorite songs, he is here, there and everywhere.

It was in 1992 that Manasseh's family picked up and left Khartoum as refugees. Their destination was Nairobi Kenya. As a Sudanese growing up in Kenya, Manasseh recalls feeling foreign and knowing that his new environment wasn't exactly home. While at school, he would recite the Kenyan loyalty pledge and recognize a desire to sing the South Sudanese national anthem.

Manasseh grew up in the church. His father was a pastor and his sisters sang in the choir and other occasions. His sisters' singing inspired him to experiment with his own artistic ability. His mother had a song for each of his siblings and he recalls music playing all around their home. Coming from a musical family his elder siblings nicknamed him “Jackson 6” as he would dance to the Jackson 5. Manasseh cites Bob Marley, Kanda Bongo Man, Coolio and Boys II Men as some of his earlier musical influences.

In 2011, when South Sudan won its independence from Sudan, Manasseh decided to return home to be a part of a society that values and accepts him as their own. He could imagine future generations being able to sing their own national anthem. Not long after the 2011 referendum, fighting broke out in South Sudan. Many citizens believed the country had a promising future and the new conflict left them disheartened. Amongst those citizens was Manasseh. His frustration would later inspire him to become a human rights and peace activist. He became one of the co-founders of AnaTaban a youth led artist collective aiming to bring peace to South Sudan.

As an Artist, Manasseh says “I do music not just to entertain, I do music to tell my story, to tell my truth.” In 2008, he released his first album Voice of My Heart which he describes as a fully gospel album that is “a conversation between me and my creator.” He took a long hiatus from music but released a few singles in 2014. In 2021, he released his second album Hagiga, the Arabic word for “truth”. Manasseh released the album while living in exile due to a government crackdown on activists. The 12 track album blends different sounds, messages and melodic moods with songs like Leadership Crisis, Gowi and Peace Sign. Some of the tracks on the album feature South Sudanese artists Natty P, Mandela DK, Kiden Lulu and a few others.

In A Conversation with Manasseh Mathiang, he speaks on which South Sudanese Artists he’d like to collaborate with, mentioning his sister Ruth Mathiang and the legendary Emmanuel Kembe. He speaks on one of the most memorable performances of his career being in Nairobi where his son and nieces saw him perform and his son later joined him on stage. Manasseh hopes to influence the thoughts, culture and life of anyone who listens to his music. A Conversation with Grace Lul: Model/Photographer

A Conversation with Grace Lul: Model/Photographer

Grace Lul is a South Sudanese Model and Photographer. As the youngest in her family, Grace recalls living in Kenya and how her family would get dressed up to go to events and her father, a pastor, would be the family photographer. After taking her first photography class in high school she was captivated by the images and their ability to invoke emotions. It was then that she realized photography is what she was meant to do. Her journey towards modeling was not ordinary. Grace had little to no aspiration to become a model. How that came to be is a result of Grace's vision and ability to take risks. Grace attended college in Minneapolis where she studied Photography. While in school she had the chance to visit a friend in Chicago and she fell in love with the city. After finishing college she decided Chicago was going to be the place where she owned her skills as a photographer. Grace entered “the art scene” by reaching out to other photographers and meeting with them. Taking a leap of faith she would ask them if they could use any assistance with their photoshoots. After a while of working with the photographers they would ask her to model. Reluctant at first, Grace remained optimistic and rose to the occasion. She discovered that she was naturally inclined and went on to embrace modeling as a job. Grace has gone on to work with brands, photographers and designers. She describes Photography as being personal and opens up about the challenges in her journey. After experiencing burnout she talks about having to go back to basics to rekindle her passion. Taking photos of random buildings, herself and trees were all things that helped bring back the joy in Photography for Grace. She leaves us with some fun answers to our This or That game, talks about her upcoming skin care video and content on social media.  Listen to our interview with Grace as she walks us through her journey as a creative.

    A Conversation with Lujang: Singer/Songwriter & Guitarist

    A Conversation with Lujang: Singer/Songwriter & Guitarist

Get to know a talented musician in this new episode of Junubia Girl Talks Creatives Series!

As one of the emerging voices out of East Africa, Lujang is a South Sudanese Singer, Songwriter, and Guitarist whose sound is as distinct and intriguing as his story. Like many musicians, he comes from a musical home. His parents first met in their church choir, they played the guitar and were one of his first musical influences. Lujang naturally went on to pick up the guitar and spent time developing his talent. In 2015 after the loss of his father, he was faced with figuring out a way forward and how to make ends meet. He thought about the talent he had cultivated all his life and decided to put it to use. Lujang took a chance at playing at his friend’s high end restaurant to see what would come of it. Playing at the high end restaurant was one of his first encounters with an audience. He enjoyed playing the guitar and went on to sing using a microphone while performing.

Shy and inexperienced, he succeeded at having only a venue, his guitar and his passion to get him through. As he became known for his talent, a year later he began making rounds performing at weddings and baby showers in his community. Although Lujang was a student in Journalism he never wandered far from music. He eventually took a leap of faith to leave school and decided that music was going to be the center of his life. He went on to release his first single titled “No Place Like Home” a blend of acoustic vibrations, soothing vocals and poetry. Today his fan base is steadily growing both offline and online as his music is easy to hear from anywhere in the world via streaming and YouTube.

In A Conversation with Lujang: Junubia Girl Talks Creatives Series we discovered that his talent and vision is not only limited to music. He is passionate about community and co founded Junubin Market KE, a pop up marketplace in Nairobi. The emerging and vibrant market doubles as a cultural hub and gathering spot for South Sudanese “Junubin” and Kenyans. It’s a magnet for creatives, local merchants, patrons and the like to network, shop, eat and enjoy art and music. On 27th of May there will be a Pop Up Market at Two Grapes Wine & Friends in Nairobi off George Padmore Road – Kilimani. The event will take place from 10am – 6pm. Patrons can shop, enjoy karaoke, face painting, food and music with a live DJ.

When Lujang is not organizing events for the market, he’s most likely working on music. While his new single is set to release soon, fans can stay up to date about announcements, upcoming performances and other acoustic sessions by following his socials @lujang____.

Lujang’s inspiring journey teaches the importance of following your passion. It’s an example of how essential it is to nurture your talent in its’ early stages. It’s a gentle reminder that we can all live meaningful lives by doing what we love and by pursuing a greater purpose beyond ourselves.
