Irresponsible attitudes about Irish travellers
I just listened to the episode about the Irish ‘entrepreneurs’, which for some bizarre reason is used as a euphemism in the episode for ‘travellers’. In the last episode, Bobby (Katherine’s husband) negotiates a deal with some workers, probably Irish travellers, who offer to power wash his drive. For no apparent reason, this episode reveals whether or not he was scammed. Which kinda implies that Irish travellers are scammers. Bobby describes how when he’s warned by Katherine that these men are Irish ‘entrepreneurs’, he becomes vigilant and “doesn’t want to leave these people alone”. Katherine goes on to justify this, saying it’s okay because “Irish people are the most against Irish entrepreneurs” (travellers). As in, against an entire ethnic group of people. SPOILER ALERT: Katherine and Bobby are NOT scammed by the travellers, although Bobby complains about the quality of the power-washing, despite rushing the men off his property as quickly as he can. Their crime? Asking if the teenaged worker can jump in the couple’s pool. Bobby still feels scammed, despite not being scammed, because the day was so stressful to him. Because the men were travellers. It’s a boring but offensive tale of straight-forward discrimination by two privileged people, perpetuated to Katherine’s large audience. Totally irresponsible, and lacking in thought or self-awareness.
