1. Listen and remember - everything you learn about your direct report is a nugget to file away and use in the future.
2. The 1:1 with you is the most important meeting in your report's calendar - treat it as such.
3. Start each day with a thank you email or ping to a colleague - your gratitude will create ripples of goodwil.
4. When someone shares something personal, ask if it's OK to check in with them about it at a later date, then DO THAT!
5. Show up early to calls and meetings - you'll see who else comes sharp and get some time to get to know them better.
6. Be consistent in celebrating birthdays, promotions, babies, new hires etc. Disparities are noticed!
7. Be present in 1:1s and demonstrate that by showing your hands! No multi-tasking. If necessary, shorten the call to a length you can manage being present for.
8. Be mindful of perceived favoritism - are you truly being equitable all the time?
9. Tap into your empathy skills by immersing yourself in movies and books which relate to a very different life experience.
10. Go easy on yourself! Managers are disproportionately affected by stress and burnout, Care but don't become a caretaker.
